2014 DE Brenon Thrift likes Pitt and WVU
By Jared Shanker
With offers from both programs, Monroeville (Pa.) Gateway defensive end Brenon Thrift pulled a double dip Saturday, stopping by the junior days for both Pittsburgh and West Virginia.
The 6-foot-3, 240-pound Thrift first went to West Virginia.
“It was great,” he said. “They got Coach [Tony] Gibson from Pitt and Arizona. He came to my school and was happy to see me.”
Gibson has recruited Western Pennsylvania the last few years and has a good relationship with several Gateway athletes. The addition of Gibson gives the Mountaineers another coach Thrift feels comfortable with.
“I like the coaching staff, like Coach [Dana] Holgorsen’s vibe,” Thrift said.
Thrift plans to play his college football relatively close to home, so Pitt and West Virginia will be around until the end for Thrift, whose teammate Ricky Rogers is a 2014 WVU verbal.
He arrived at Pitt around 3:30 p.m., so he missed the junior day basketball game, but he was still able to talk with assistant coach Bobby Engram.
“They’re going to be evaluating me,” he said, “but the offer is still on the table.”
