Steelers fan Ways takes in Pitt experience
By Jared Shanker
When Maurice Ways (Beverly Hills, Mich./Detroit Country Day) was 7 years old, he received a Christmas present from his aunt who lives in Pittsburgh. It was a Troy Polamalu jersey, and from that day on, Ways has been a die-hard Steelers fan.
So when the 2014 receiver was invited to Pittsburgh’s junior day, he jumped on it. Naturally his favorite part was when the Panthers coaches showed the recruits around the facilities and Heinz Field, which they share with the Steelers.
“I’m a big Steelers fan, a huge Steelers fan,” he said. “To see the locker room was a dream come true. We got on the field and walked around and took pictures. It was a great experience.”
Pitt is interested in the 6-foot-3, 186-pound Ways, who already holds offers from Bowling Green and Toledo. Assistant coach Matt House is recruiting Ways, and the coach told Ways he would like for him to come back to Pitt again in the near future, possibly as soon as next month for a spring practice.
Ways met with receivers coach Bobby Engram for the first time Saturday, and Engram let Ways know he liked what he saw on film.
“He said to continue to call and email and keep in touch,” Ways said, “and he said all the coaches were impressed and he really liked me.”
While Ways is still working toward a Pitt offer, it should not be long before Ways begins adding BCS offers. Following his Pitt visit, he said he could definitely see himself playing for the program if it does offer down the line.
“I would like to see the campus more, but the first impression is I could see myself being there and spending three or four years there,” Ways said. “I like the facilities and coaches and direction they’re heading in.”
