UConn nabs sleeper DE Stevens
Jalen Stevens, a high three-star prospect from Goose Creek, S.C., has committed to play for the Huskies, multiple sources report. ESPN considers Stevens a top-50 defensive end and the eighth best player in South Carolina for 2013.
Arizona State, North Carolina and Southern Miss also extended scholarship offers to the 6-foot-2, 216-pound senior. Several other programs showed interest including Clemson, Minnesota, North Carolina State, Pittsburgh, South Carolina and Virginia Tech.
ESPN states in his evaluation: "Stevens is very active defending against the run and pass ... may not be an immediate starter at the BCS level of play, however his athleticism and toughness could earn him early situational playing time if a redshirt year isn't deemed necessary."
Stevens registered an electronically timed 4.83 40-yard dash, 4.56 20-yard shuttle, 27.7-inch vertical and 65.55 SPARQ this spring at a Nike combine.
He is now UConn's highest-rated defensive pledge. The Huskies have 18 total verbals.
