By Derek Tyson
ST. PETERSBURG, Fla. -- Class of 2014 running back prospect Johnathan Thomas (Danvers, Mass./St. Johns Prep) posted one of the top 40-yard-dash times at the Under Armour National Combine on Friday. The 5-foot-10, 196-pound athlete turned in a blazing 4.47 40 time.
Thomas is expected to be one of the top prospects in Massachussetts and he's already hearing from some of the top schools in the northeast.
"I have offers from Boston College, UMass, Virginia and UConn. Penn State is showing a lot of interest," Thomas said. "So is Virginia Tech."
The talented athlete, who carries a 3.7 GPA, said there are a few schools he's like to hear more from.
"I'd like to hear from Clemson, South Carolina, Virginia Tech, Maryland and Vanderbilt. I hear from Virginia Tech already, but I'd like to hear more from them."
Thomas admits Virginia is a school that stands out to him. Not just becuase of its football program, but also because of its high academic standards.
"My mom always tells me I have to think about life after football," Thomas said. "I would get a great education at Virginia. You just have to think about life after football if it doesn't work out for you, you have to have the education to back it up."
For Thomas, he has no plans to attend any college junior days, but after his performance at the UA combine, he should certainly see his recruitment pick up.
