WR Corey Smith makes the call
East Mississippi Community College (Scooba, Miss.) wide receiver Corey Smith committed today to play for coach Dan Mullen and the Mississippi State Bulldogs, multiple sources report. He spent the weekend touring the Starkville campus on an official visit.
Smith is the second junior college pass-catcher to select the Bulldogs today. Tyler (Texas) Junior College's Jeremy Chappelle also jumped on board.
Smith has an official visit to Ohio State scheduled for Jan. 11. Akron, Alabama, Arkansas, Ball State, Georgia, Hawaii, Illinois, Indiana, Iowa, Miami (OH), North Carolina, Ole Miss, Penn State, Tennessee, Texas, Toledo and Vanderbilt were his other offers.
He was originally a three-star prospect out of Akron (Ohio) Buchtel for the Class of 2013. He committed to Tennessee but needed to go the junior college route and did not sign with the Vols.
At that time, ESPN described him as, "a crafty route runner with quick hands, quick feet and good, sneaky speed to threaten the deep field... Time in the weight room is going to enhance his physicality. He makes plays, is reliable and has a feel for coverage and how to get open. Good prospect."
Mississippi State now has 22 verbals.
