Scouts: UCLA likes Ortiz on offense
By Billy Tucker
A talented cornerback and overall athlete, it appears Jalen Ortiz (Peoria, Ariz./Centennial) is being recruited to play offense for the Bruins and could be a nice little weapon for coordinator Noel Mazzone’s spread scheme that utilizes versatile slots. Ortiz is small but extremely quick and elusive and we see him developing into that inside position where he will be utilized on bubble screens, quick check downs and motion sweeps to exploit his big-play burst and acceleration. The dynamic athlete has impressive vision and balance to dart his way through underneath traffic and find the vertical seam for big gainers. A very good space player, he has naturally running back skill-set and the ability to turn the short pass into a big gainer which will be utilized. Despite their loss to Oregon State this past weekend, UCLA is having a breakout year moving the ball, No. 3 in total offense, and should continue this production in the future as they find system fitters like Ortiz for their offense.
