Scouts: Taquan Mizzell could make early impact at Virginia
By Billy Tucker
This is a huge pickup for Mike London and the Virginia Cavaliers program as they land one of the state's premier prospects with some of the best all-purpose skills in the country. Taquan Mizzell (Virginia Beach, Va./Bayside) is extremely versatile in his ability to move the chains and should be able to contribute immediately for Virginia given how dynamic he is. This is a back capable of producing inside or out on the ground, through the air as a receiver and in the return game on special teams.
Not the biggest back, but he is compact and explosive with very good feet and balance, making him a slippery runner to wrap up. While he can certainly elude through the hole he is deceptively strong and will get downhill decisively when the inside hole is present. Has the vision and quick cutback skill to excel as an inside zone runner at the next level. The knock on Mizzell may be that he does not have load-back qualities or great top-end speed to project as a home run threat; he's quicker than fast. Still we see plenty of big plays in the ACC if used creatively. Mizzell does run bigger than his measurables suggest and an every-down role similar to what Perry Jones is doing now for the Cavs at 185 pounds is not out of the question. Virginia has talented young depth at the running back position but we expect Mizzell to be utilized early in some facet.
