Arizona State capped off a very impressive week of recruiting as ESPN 300 linebacker D.J. Calhoun (El Cerrito, Calif./El Cerrito) committed on Sunday afternoon.
Calhoun is the second ESPN 300 and third four-star verbal commitment of the past week for the Sun Devils, who recently jumped seven spots -- to No. 27 overall -- in the class rankings.
This commitment is another result from a terrific showing last weekend, when Arizona State put up a big win against Washington and the coaches hit every correct note with three official visitors in town. Arizona State now has gone 3 for 3 with those visitors, as Calhoun's teammate Jalen Harvey decommitted from Cal and committed to Arizona State on Monday, four-star offensive tackle Sam Jones (Highlands Ranch, Colo./Thunder Ridge) committed on Tuesday, and Calhoun completed the hat trick.
The announcement capped off something of a wild week for Calhoun, who decommitted from USC during his official visit to Arizona State. The nation's No. 226 overall prospect had been unsteady in his USC commitment ever since the Trojans' poor showing in the second game of the season -- a 10-7 setback against Washington State. Following that game, Calhoun announced that he would take official visits, though he maintained his commitment status.
But this recent visit to Arizona State was enough to make the linebacker completely change course . Following the visit, Calhoun said he loved everything about the trip, specifically mentioning the city, coaching staff and academic support at Arizona State.
The recruiting pitch followed him home in the form of Harvey and Arizona State quarterback commit Manny Wilkins (Novato, Calif./San Marin) -- who has been on a recruiting tear this fall -- and Calhoun eventually decided that his decision was made.
Calhoun was scheduled to make an official visit to UCLA this coming weekend and then talked about a likely trip to USC and a possible visit to Nebraska. But after Calhoun's commitment, his father said those trips would no longer take place and that the standout linebacker is done with his recruitment.
Calhoun is commitment No. 18 overall for Arizona State, the fifth ESPN 300 commitment and the second linebacker in the Sun Devils' 2014 recruiting class.
