Texas received a commitment Tuesday night from an unexpected source: A member of the class of 2016.
Manvel (Texas) wide receiver Reggie Hemphill confirmed to ESPN.com that he has officially become the first member of Texas' 2016 recruiting class.
The 6-foot-2, 168-pound sophomore had already established himself as one of the state's best prospects in his class and received an offer from the Longhorns in July at their Texas Stampede event.
Hemphill received an offer earlier than perhaps any other recruit in the Mack Brown era at Texas. He rewarded that gesture by making a surprising commitment Tuesday.
Hemphill was one of the stars of Texas' three-day camp in June along with Manvel teammate Deontay Anderson, a fellow 2016 recruit. They're the only two prospects in the 2016 class to hold UT offers.
