Safety Chris Payne (Perkinston, Miss./Gulf Coast C.C.) is elated to have a second opportunity to play big time college football. After visiting both Texas Tech and Kentucky, Payne has elected to play in Lubbock for Texas Tech and coach Tommy Tuberville.
“I committed to Texas Tech over weekend,” Payne said. “I love how laid back it is. I know a lot about Tommy Tuberville from his Auburn days. The guy is a winner. He’s trying to change everything around and he has this vision. Talking with players and seeing what they are doing just blew my mind. I wanted to be a part of that.”
Payne, 5-foot-10 and 190-pounds, is from Columbia, S.C. The former ESPNU 150 member signed with South Carolina back failed to qualify and ended up in junior college in Mississippi.
“That was the best thing that happened to me,” Payne said. “It taught me a lot of things. I am more mature and it gave me fresh start on my own.
“Now I am headed to Texas Tech. I just want to say how blessed I feel to have this opportunity. Guns up, I am going to Texas Tech.”
Payne finished the season with, 93 tackles, 10 tackles for a loss, three sacks, and an interception.
