TUSCALOOSA, Ala. -- Less than a week after ESPN 150 wide receiver Robert Foster committed to Alabama, the Crimson Tide received more good news on Christmas night when offensive tackle Brandon Hill (Collierville, Tenn./Hargrave) recommitted to UA.
Hill originally signed with Alabama out of high school last year but failed to qualify. After playing a year at Hargrave Military Academy, he’s back with the Tide.
“Since I didn’t qualify, I had to make my mind up that once I got to Hargrave, I was going to some college,” Hill said. “At Hargrave, I had mixed feelings and emotions. I knew in my heart all along, I wanted to play in front of people, and I knew that going to Alabama would get me closer to my family.
“I called Coach [Mike] Groh up and told him that’s where I wanted to be. When I went down for my official visit, it just sealed the deal. Now, I’m just really trying to get down there and make an impact on the team.”
During his one year at Hargrave, Hill flirted with other interested schools and even gave a verbal commitment to Ole Miss.
“When I committed to Ole Miss, we both felt like it was kind of shaky,” he said. “We both knew it wasn’t 100 percent.”
In the end, Hill knew he wanted to be at Alabama. Now, he has his sights set on coming in early and competing for the right tackle spot if current starter D.J. Fluker leaves early for the NFL as expected.
“My goal for when I get to Alabama is to come in and try to get the coaches to see, ‘hey, this kid can work hard,’” Hill said. “There’s a lot of competition to start, but I’m going to work my hardest to try to get it because I want to get in, start right away and showcase myself.”
Hill currently measures in at 6-foot-7, 390 pounds, but he’s trying to get in shape for when he moves to Tuscaloosa next month.
“Right now, I’m just working,” he said. “I’m working out like three times a day. I’m trying to get down to where I can prepare my body for the workouts that I’m about to go through when I get to Alabama.”
The Tide now have 21 players committed in their 2013 class.
