ESPN 300 wide receiver Dannon Cavil (San Antonio/Madison) decommitted from Ole Miss and chose to take his talents to the West Coast on Saturday.
Cavil, No. 240 in the ESPN 300, verbally committed to California and became the Golden Bears’ 17th commit of the 2013 recruiting class. A big-bodied receiver at 6-foot-5 and 205 pounds, Cavil also became the third ESPN 300 athlete to give Cal a pledge.
What caused the switch? Cavil called it “soul searching.”
“It was just a better fit for me,” Cavil said. “After talking to my parents, it came down to not just the next 4-5 years of my life but the next 40-50 years of my life.”
Cavil committed to Ole Miss on March 5, but he always kept in touch with the Cal staff. He was recruited by quarterbacks coach Marcus Arroyo before head coach Jeff Tedford was fired in November. New head coach Sonny Dykes and receivers coach/assistant head coach Rob Likens have been persistent in recruiting Cavil.
“When Coach Dykes and Coach Likens came to my house, they told me about their plans and how they saw me in the offense,” said Cavil, who took an official visit to Cal on Oct. 6. “They were excited about it. It was really exciting to hear it.
“Coach Arroyo kind of started it all for me, so I really have to give him a shout-out. He really recruited me hard.”
Cavil had multiple offers to choose from, including South Carolina, Clemson, Baylor and Mississippi. He is the No. 35 receiver nationally and the No. 31 player in Texas in the 2013 class.
