One of the first calls new Tennessee coach Butch Jones made after taking the job was to the mother of ESPN 300 athlete Tyler Boyd. That was last week.
On Friday, just a few hours after Boyd and his Clairton (Pa.) teammates won a fourth straight state title and 63rd straight game, the Volunteers staff made another call to the Boyd camp. Jones let Boyd know he had an offer from the Volunteers.
Boyd reported the offer in a text message Friday night.
Boyd officially visited Pittsburgh in November and was planning an early January decision, but that appears unlikely now as he wants to take more official visits. Arizona, Michigan State, Penn State, Rutgers and West Virginia are all destinations Boyd is considering, and he said the Spartans and Mountaineers will likely get visits in mid-January.
It remains to be seen how much Boyd will consider the Volunteers' late offer.
