MONTGOMERY, Ala. -- ESPN 300 cornerback Marquez White (Dothan, Ala./Northview) committed to Florida State in May, but there’s been plenty of speculation surrounding his recruitment since then. Where’s he stand now?
“I’m still firm to Florida State,” White said.
Recently, the four-star took an official visit to Minnesota. It was first trip to Minneapolis.
“It was good,” he said. “It was different. I’ve never been to Minnesota. I’ve never even been that far. Just the people, the environment, the way the students interacted with each other, the football team, it was real good to see.”
Following the visit, Minnesota came down for an in-home visit with White. The Florida State coaching staff also stopped by last week.
“It went good,” White said of the in-home visit with FSU. “I enjoyed it. They were just telling me to stay healthy and get ready for this game.”
On Saturday, White is set to play in the Alabama-Mississippi All-Star Game. All week, he and the other defensive backs have been going head-to-head with a wide receiver group that features Auburn commitments Earnest Robinson and Jason Smith.
“There’s a lot of good players,” White said. “We’re competing against the receivers, and they’ve got a lot of good players, too. By who were working against every day, we should be ready by Saturday.”
Both in-state schools, Alabama and Auburn, have shown some interest in the Alabama native. However, White says he hasn’t heard from the Crimson Tide lately, and new AU head coach Gus Malzahn hasn’t reached out to him yet.
White would more than likely listen if Malzahn called.
“He’s a good coach,” White said. “If you want to play receiver, that’s the school to go to with just how they throw the ball around.”
Still, the 6-foot-1, 170-pound prospect wants his future to be on the defensive side of the ball. He’s practiced at cornerback all week, and he wants to stay there at the next level.
“I like corner because I like taking away from people,” White said. “I like trying to keep people from catching the ball. This week, I want to win the game, make history and hopefully help my team get a shutout.”
