Saying it was the best decision for him, three-star offensive tackle Dalton Rodriguez (Tulsa, Okla./Union) tweeted he has switched his commitment from Oklahoma to Tulsa on Thursday afternoon. Rodriguez confirmed the news via text message to ESPN.com.
Rodriguez, who is 6-foot-6 and 255 pounds, was being recruited as an offensive tackle by the Sooners. However, he never took a snap at the position during high school. He has been one of the best defensive ends in the state the last two seasons.
OU picked up another defensive end commit in Houston Alief Taylor’s Ogbonnia Okoronkwo on Wednesday afternoon, giving the Sooners three quality defensive ends to go with ESPN 300 prospects D.J. Ward (Moore, Okla./Southmoore) and Matt Dimon (Katy, Texas/Katy).
The chance of Rodriguez switching from offensive tackle to defensive end was essentially eliminated with Okoronkwo’s commitment.
Rodriguez said he had been feeling this way for a while but wanted to approach OU offensive tackles coach Bruce Kittle about the situation following the regular season.
Kittle said before the season for Rodriguez to just enjoy his senior season and his situation would be addressed at a later date. But as time kept moving on, it has become apparent OU needs offensive tackle help a lot more than defensive end support.
If Rodriguez is moved to defensive end, he is the second end commit for the Golden Hurricane. Rodriguez is ranked No. 9 in Oklahoma and is the third Tulsa Union recruit to commit to Tulsa.
Three-star tight end Chris Hall and wide receiver Kahlid Kornegay have also pledged to the Golden Hurricane. It has been a good week for Tulsa as former Texas Tech cornerback commit Will Barrow (Dallas/Skyline) committed to Tulsa on Wednesday night.
For OU, it’s back to the drawing board at offensive tackle. The Sooners are gunning for three commits at the spot for its 2013 class. OU currently has no commits at the position although it is in the running for several quality prospects, including four-star prospect Aaron Cochran (Atwater, Calif./Buhach) and junior college recruit Josiah St. John (Athens, Texas/Trinity Valley).
