Few can say they knocked dual-threat, stud quarterback Kenny Hill (Southlake, Texas/Carroll) off his feet with one shot. At 6-foot-1 and 205 pounds, that’s not an easy task, as he can be a truck running the ball.
Taylor Young (DeSoto, Texas/DeSoto) not only made signature hits on Hill Saturday, but he also was in on three of the biggest plays of the season for DeSoto. The 5-foot-10, 225-pound inside linebacker helped DeSoto execute a successful goal-line stand -- stopping Carroll on three straight plays inside the 3-yard line -- to earn a spot in the Texas Class 5A Division I state semifinals this weekend.
“Everybody called me out. People said we couldn’t stop Kenny Hill,” Young said. “But we came together as a family and proved we could.”
DeSoto coach Claude Mathis said Young set the tone with his shot that sent Hill slightly backwards in the first half of a 49-45 win. Mathis also said Young’s fearless attitude and his warrior mentality makes him a player to watch on the collegiate level.
Young said he’s got offers from Colorado State, Louisiana-Monroe and Rice. After the season, he will focus his full attention on picking a college program that will fit him. Young, however, did say he has an early favorite, but nothing is set in stone.
“I really like Louisiana-Monroe,” he said, “but I’m hoping I can get some more looks.”
