ESPN 300 running back Keyante Green (McDonough, Ga./Eagles Landing Christian Academy) was on his way to the airport after the conclusion of his official visit to Purdue when he found out Danny Hope had been fired as the head coach of the Boilermakers.
“When I heard he got fired, I was a little sad,” Green said. “I was on my official visit, and I had just got done talking to him that morning. He was telling me how they were about to be off, and he was going to send some of the coaches down to see me and watch me in the playoffs. So I was pretty excited for them to come down and see me. Then when I was just about to board the plane I heard he got fired. I was upset about that, because Coach Hope is one reason I committed to Purdue.”
The elusive tailback has 17 offers from major programs like Ohio State, Florida State and South Carolina, but the 5-foot-9, 190-pound senior plans to stick with Purdue despite the dismissal of Hope.
“Coach Hope is a good guy and a good coach,” Green said. “I was pretty upset that he got fired, and I am really close to the running backs coach. He and I have that connection. Hearing Coach Hope and his staff got fired really made me mad, but I love Purdue. I love the players there. I got to talk to a lot of them on my official visit. They love Coach Hope, and I love Coach Hope, so I am in the same situation they are in. Basically if they are still down, then I am still down. So I am still committed to Purdue, and I still plan on going to Purdue.”
Green, who is nursing a slight ankle injury, hopes to be ready for his playoff game against Savannah Christian (Ga.) High School this Friday. Between the treatments and film study, he will keep an eye on the Purdue coaching situation.
“I am going to see who the head coach is and how the new staff is about recruiting me as a player,” Green said. “I will see if they still want me, because basically it is all up to them. I am still committed, and I still want to go to Purdue. It is one of the best educations you can have, and I want an education from that school”
