Fullback Grant Niemiec (Orchard Lake, Mich./St. Mary’s Prep) wanted to commit right away, but he wanted to be patient.
That lasted about 12 hours. Niemiec added an offer from Miami (Ohio) on Thursday and committed Friday morning.
“I got the offer and I was real excited. I kind of wanted to commit right there but knew I had to talk with my family and pray about it and make sure it’s the right decision and best place for me and my future,” Niemiec said. “I talked with my family and decided it’s an awesome place and where I wanted to be.”
Buffalo and Eastern Michigan also offered Niemiec, but Miami’s academics set them apart from the rest.
“It’s a superior school, one of the best academic schools you can go to. That’s No. 1 for me,” he said. “I know football’s not everything and one day football will be gone and I've got to be in the right situation when that ends and Miami will put me there.”
Niemic made an unofficial visit to Miami earlier this month for the game against Ohio. The RedHawks beat Ohio and ended the Bobcats’ undefeated season.
“It was fun down on the field. It was a fun time being up close and for them to upset Ohio and everyone rushed the field,” he said. “I had some time to talk to all the coaches and it was just an awesome place.”
