DE Donnie White Jr. chooses Tulsa

11/5/2012

Tulsa’s 2013 recruiting class hit a baker’s dozen Monday night, as three-star defensive end Donnie White Jr. (St. Louis/De Smet) verbally committed to the Golden Hurricane.

A 6-foot-3, 220-pound defensive end/outside linebacker hybrid, White is Tulsa’s first commit of the kind. Ranked No. 18 in Missouri, White chose Tulsa over offers from Arkansas, Arkansas State, Boston College and New Mexico. He also had interest from Missouri, Iowa State, Arizona State and other programs.

“From the coaches to the whole community, I just felt welcomed,” White said. “I felt I could see myself there for four years.”

Recruited by defensive ends coach Adam Blankenship, White brings versatility and a high motor to Tulsa. As quick off the ball he is as a defensive end, he’s equally quick laterally as an outside linebacker.

For the season, White has 43 tackles, 13 sacks and two fumble recoveries. He has led De Smet to an 8-3 record and has the Spartans in the Missouri Class 6 District 2 championship game on Friday.

“I’m very happy with my decision,” he said. “It was a long time waiting, and I’m glad I got it out of the way. Now, I can focus on the playoffs for my team.”

White also said Tulsa’s academic program was attractive to him. White said with Tulsa being a private institute of higher learning, he would have smaller classroom environments, which could lead to easier opportunities for 1-on-1 sessions with his teachers. White said he wants to major in marketing.
