With the game out of reach against Fort Myers (Fla.) Dunbar and any hopes at a postseason fading, ESPN 300 defensive end Eric Mayes (Sarasota, Fla./Booker) wanted to make one last play that he hoped would inspire the younger guys for the future.
Dunbar sophomore running back Marquise Bryant took a handoff from the 1-yard-line and broke through Booker’s defense en route to what looked like a 99-yard touchdown run. But Mayes never gave up on the play and the 6-foot-5, 240-pound senior chased Bryant down 70 yards later.
“The game was pretty much over but that doesn’t mean you stop trying,” Mayes said. “I was upset at myself for letting him get away the first time so I wanted to try to catch him again.”
