At 5-foot-11 and 200 pounds, Charles Woods (Kilgore, Texas/Kilgore College) is versatile enough to play outside linebacker, inside linebacker and safety. His versatility has been a major factor in Kilgore’s 6-0 start and No. 5 ranking in the NJCAA poll.
Woods’ versatility also has been a pain in the side of opposing teams. The sophomore, originally from Humble, Texas, has 51 tackles on the season and he’s also forced five fumbles, recovering two.
“A lot of the players on the team say I’m a playmaker,” Woods said. “That’s one of my attributes. When a play come s to me, I try to make the best of it.
“The season’s been really good for all of us. I owe all the credit to the defensive line. We have a good team; it’s like a family here. That’s how we got to be No. 5 in the nation.”
With all that Woods has done, however, his recruiting stock isn’t where many feel it should be. Woods’ only offer currently is from Division II Lincoln (Mo.) University, but he has received interest from TCU and UTSA.
Woods said he is OK playing at linebacker or safety. Kilgore uses him as both an inside and outside backer, but he saw time in high school all over the field.
As long as he’s making plays, Woods said he’ll play anywhere -- and he’s entertaining all offers.
“Those who see me, expect me to run to the ball and make big hits,” Woods said. “Wherever you see the ball, you going to see Charles Woods close by.”
