On a team with FBS commits and several players with FBS offers and interest, 2014 safety Terry Ausborne (Tyler, Texas/John Tyler) quietly emerges as the player everybody talks about after a John Tyler game.
A 5-foot-11, 165-pound safety, Ausborne has been very consistent for a Lions team that is owns one of the best defensive units in East Texas. Ausborne was a second-team all-district selection last season as a sophomore, and he’s continuing his solid efforts as a junior.
“I just describe myself as someone who wants to get better every day in practice,” Ausborne said. “I’m just trying to do a good job and help my team win on Friday nights.
“Our coaches put me in the right position to make a play. It’s my job to make the play.”
Ausborne’s play has garnered the attention of several FBS programs. Oklahoma State, TCU and SMU have shown interest, as have Nebraska, Rice and Tulsa.
Ausborne is still waiting for his first offer, but his main focus right now is to guide his team as far as possible in the upcoming playoffs. John Tyler advanced to the Texas Class 4A Division I state semifinals last season.
While he helps the team, Ausborne said he also wants to stay relevant by establishing himself as a playmaker and the Lions’ go-to guy on defense.
“I just want to keep my name in the news,” Ausborne said. “I want to make myself a star player and make people remember me every time I play.”
