Delton Williams adds versatility to MSU

10/9/2012

With only a few open scholarships remaining, Michigan State landed one of its most important remaining targets.

Four-star athlete Delton Williams (Erie, Pa./Cathedral Prep) committed to Michigan State in an announcement at his school Tuesday. He chose the Spartans over fellow finalist West Virginia.

“I like how the coaches handle everything,” Williams said last week about Michigan State. “My teammate is going there, so I’m going to be comfortable going there with him. We can help each other out set some goals to get to the next level.

“I like the program. When I got down there [the first time] it caught my eye with the Wisconsin-Michigan State game and the jump ball and the stadium went crazy.”

Williams made a visit to Michigan State for the Ohio State game Sept. 29. While there was talk he could commit while visiting or the following weekend after playing rival McDowell, Williams kept the Spartans waiting a few more days.

The 6-foot-1, 205-pound Williams could play safety or linebacker in East Lansing, possibly even running back.

Williams’ teammate and ESPN 300 quarterback Damion Terry is also committed to Michigan State.

The commitment of Williams helps fortify an already strong defensive class for the Spartans. With defense already the calling card of Michigan State and coach Mark Dantonio, Williams helps bolster a class heavy on defense at the top. Williams can play strong safety aside fellow four-star safety Jalyn Powell (Warren, Ohio/Warren G. Harding), who might be better suited as a free safety.

If he adds more weight, Williams could move down to outside linebacker to form a talented four-star linebacker group with ESPN 300 inside linebacker Shane Jones (Cincinnati/Moeller) and outside linebacker Jon Reschke (Bloomfield, Mich./Brother Rice).
