Ryan Smith back from Utah State visit

9/12/2012

Wide receiver Ryan Smith (Las Vegas/Bishop Gorman) took his first official visit this past weekend, as he visited Utah State. He picked a good time to do so, as Utah State knocked off Utah for the first time since 1997.

“It was great,” Smith said of the trip. “Obviously that’s a college town where everybody goes to the games.”

Smith said it didn’t take long to realize that there is a significant difference between Las Vegas and Logan, Utah, but the small town atmosphere didn’t rattle him.

“I lived in Missouri, Indiana and Ohio and most of the towns were pretty small,” Smith said. “So I’ve lived in towns similar to Logan.”

Smith said he hit it off with the coaching staff and had a good time at the game, but had already decided that he wasn’t going to make an early commitment. He said the Aggies coaches told him they would welcome one at any time, but that isn’t likely to happen soon.

“I just want to take my time and finish the rest of the season,” Smith said.

Bishop Gorman plays one of the more entertaining non-conference schedules of any team in the country. Wins over Olney (Md.) Good Counsel and Honolulu St. Louis have the Gaels off to a great start, as games against Oradell (NJ) Bergen Catholic and Anaheim (Calif.) Servite approach to round out the non-conference slate.

The 5-foot-7, 160-pound wide receiver caught three passes in each of the first two games and now has six receptions for 152 yards and three touchdowns this season to go with a 52-yard punt return. He said two more high-profile contests are nothing new for Bishop Gorman.

“We just have to stay focused,” Smith said. “If we go into these games like we did with our other games, we’ll be fine.”
