Ball State adds two defensive backs

Desmond King (Detroit/Crockett Tech) and Ralph Smith (Avon, Ohio) have committed to play in the Mid-American Conference for Ball State, multiple sources report.

King, a 5-foot-11, 178-pounder, decommitted from Central Michigan in favor of the Cardinals. Wisconsin, Buffalo, Eastern Michigan, Northern Illinois and Western Michigan also extended scholarship offers. Bowling Green, Indiana, Michigan, Michigan State, Mississippi State, Northwestern, Notre Dame, Penn State, Princeton and Toledo showed preliminary interest.

The 5-foot-9, 163-pound Smith selected the Cardinals over a scholarship offer from Akron while Bowling Green, Buffalo, Eastern Michigan and Toledo showed interest. He posted impressive combine figures prior to his junior season including a 4.82 40-yard dash, 4.31 20-yard shuttle and 30.7-inch vertical.

Ball State now has 14 verbals for 2013.
