Travon Blanchard '112 percent' to Baylor

COLLEGE STATION, Texas – Four-star outside linebacker Travon Blanchard (Orange, Texas/West Orange-Stark) has heard the rumors – and he addressed them on Thursday.

The 6-foot-2, 185-pound outside linebacker has been hearing via social media sites that he was considering decommitting from Baylor. Prior to West Orange-Stark’s second pool-play game at the Texas State 7-on-7 Championships, Blanchard silenced critics by reconfirming his pledge to the Bears.

“I’m 112-percent Baylor. Sic ‘em Bears,” he said.

Blanchard’s 112-percent comment referred to former teammate Reggie Garrett, a star quarterback who collapsed and died during a September 2010 game. Garrett wore No. 12, and “112%” has been a team motto for West Orange-Stark since Garrett’s death.

Blanchard said he’s heard that TCU, one of his favorites early in the recruiting process, is now back in the mix. Blanchard said he is excited about putting on a Baylor uniform in 2013 and is expected to line up at the nickelback spot that Ahmad Dixon plays.

“Baylor’s an up-and-coming program, and the coaches make me feel at home down there,” Blanchard said. “I can get a great education there, just in case football doesn’t work out. Football is only temporary. I can see myself there for five years, if I do decide to redshirt.”

“I’m just ready to get there. Anywhere the coaches are willing to put me -- from corner to safety to outside linebacker -- I’m willing to play.”

Blanchard finished his junior season as a first-team, all-district selection. He helped West Orange-Stark to a 10-4 finish and a trip to the Texas Class 3A Division II state quarterfinals. Blanchard is ranked No. 36 among all outside linebackers nationally and No. 51 among players in Texas in the 2013 class.
