Tulsa, SDSU interested in OT Potts

5/11/2012

Connor Potts (El Paso, Texas/Franklin), at 6-foot-6 and 315 pounds, is a bull at offensive tackle. After Thursday’s announcement of teammate and right tackle Derek Elmendorff verbally committing to UTEP, many are now wondering where the bull will end up in college.

Potts said he’s been in contact with Tulsa and San Diego State – in addition to UTEP. He’s hoping that the Nike Football Training Camp next weekend in Oakland, Calif., and a Next Level Camp the week after in Austin will assist in his rising recruiting process.

“Things are starting to pick up,” Potts said. I got a call from Tulsa last week, and I’ve been talking to the San Diego State coaches. Those two schools have been pretty serious.”

The NFTC in Oakland, set for May 20, could be his ticket to shine. Potts is still relatively new to football, as he only started playing high school ball his sophomore year. Potts originally turned his attention to baseball, but he’s been a starter on the offensive line ever since.

Additionally, Potts is a 4.0 student and is ranked top-10 percent of his class. He said he is working on taking an unofficial visit to Stanford while he is in the northern California area.

“I definitely want to go to a school with great academics,” Potts said. “I’d like to do something involving investing, finance or even law. Academics are big, but I also want to be at a place with good football.”

For a player still raw to the sport, Potts has shown that he has great feet and that he is a solid blocker. He was a first-team, all-district selection on a Franklin team that finished 10-2 and advanced to the second round of the Texas Class 5A Division I playoffs.

“I think I go hard until the whistle,” Potts said, “and I’m only going to get better.”
