South Alabama ready for the jump

2/3/2012

27 more prospects have signed to play for South Alabama as the Jaguars prepare to join the Sun Belt Conference in 2012.

“It was a tedious process trying to find the right guys. When it comes down to the end, you really just want to get the best players you can get,” head coach Joey Jones said in a press conference Wednesday. “You want to fill needs, but you don’t want to take a number just because you need another lineman or another guy in the secondary unless they are a very good player. I think we tried to be strict in what we wanted to accomplish with the type of student-athletes we are bringing in.”

Two standout defensive linemen from Prattville (Ala.) High School, Terrance Jones and Jay Minor, inked with the Jags. Both players were rated as high three-star prospects by ESPNU.

A trio of three-star offensive lineman, Steve McKenzie (Stone Mountain, Ga./Stephenson), Steven Foster (Demopolis, Ala.) and Clay Machen (Auburn, Ala.), and a three-star tight end Paul Kyles (Prichard, Ala.), are all headed to South Alabama as well.

This wasn't the first South Alabama class with BCS-caliber talent. Last February, the program signed linebacker Maleki Harris (Calera, Ala.), running back J.J. Keels (Melbourne, Fla.), and safety Carl Williams (Jacksonville, Fla./First Coast), who all received BCS-level evaluations from ESPNU.
