Panthers stop the bleeding

Senior offensive lineman Gabe Roberts (New London, Wis.) has committed to Pittsburgh, according to the Tribune-Review. Wisconsin recruited the 6-foot-4, 290-pound Roberts but only offered him as a walk-on.

"(Gabe and Wisconsin) went back and forth," New London coach Pete Mroczynski said. "They talked about different options, but they never came through. It's a case of one in the hand is better than two in the bush."

Roberts made an official visit to Pittsburgh Jan. 20 and spent this weekend in Madison, Wis. He suffered a hip injury during the spring track season, which hampered him some this fall.

Following their coaching change, the Panthers held onto most of their prized recruits, including ESPNU 150 running back Rushel Shell (Aliquippa, Pa./Hopewell) and four-star quarterback Chad Voytick (Cleveland, Tenn.), but Pittsburgh lost multiple verbals in January.
