Mississippi State lands DT Hoyett

Senior defensive tackle Braxton Hoyett (Pelham, Ala./Pelham) committed Friday to sign with Mississippi State. He posted the decision, which has been confirmed by multiple reports, on Twitter:


According to, Hoyett selected the Bulldogs over Miami (Fla.). In April, he said, "I really like the chance at Mississippi State. Miami was the first school that offered me, too. I have a really good relationship with those coaches as well. I can't think of anything that I wouldn't like about Miami, but I really do like Mississippi State, though."

Since that statement, the Hurricanes picked up commitments from five high school defensive linemen and now have 26 total commitments.

Samford, South Alabama and UAB also extended scholarship offers to the 6-foot-3, 274-pound prospect. Auburn, Georgia Tech, Memphis, Missouri, Ole Miss and Tennessee showed interest.

The Bulldogs have 16 pledges. Their class is currently ranked 33rd by Recruiting Nation.

Wade Freebeck says yes to Pitt

The Pittsburgh Panthers scored a commitment Sunday from four-star quarterback Wade Freebeck (Fort Lauderdale, Fla./St. Thomas Aquinas), according to multiple reports.

Akron, Florida, Marshall, Samford and South Florida also extended scholarship offers to the 6-foot-4, 180-pound pocket passer. Alabama, Arkansas and North Carolina showed interest.

"No matter how much you learn, you really don't know until you visit," Freebeck, who made a trip to campus last week, told the Sun Sentinel. "The city, the coaching staff -- I was feeling good. I'm confident in my decision."

The Panthers have 13 pledges for 2014. Freebeck is their highest-rated commitment.

Athletic QB Porter picks South Florida

The Bulls landed a commitment Wednesday from Deiondre Porter (Tampa, Fla./Jefferson), a high school quarterback who could play corner for at South Florida, according to the Tampa Bay Times.

Coastal Carolina, Iowa State and Samford also extended scholarship offers to the 6-foot-1, 167-pound prospect.

Last fall, Porter threw for 2,276 yards (61 percent), 27 touchdowns and 13 interceptions and rushed for 400 yards and five scores.

Additionally, this spring he displayed the athleticism necessary for a move to the defensive backfield. He registered an electronically-timed 4.67 40-yard dash and 36.9-inch vertical at a Nike Combine.

USF has eight pledges for 2014.

FAU wins battle for Bobby Mitchell

6-foot-2, 175-pound wide receiver Bobby Mitchell (St. Augustine, Fla./St. Augustine) is the latest 2013 verbal for Florida Atlantic, multiple sources report.

The Owls topped scholarship offers from Arkansas State, UMass, Middle Tennessee, Presbyterian, Samford, UAB and Western Kentucky for Mitchell's commitment.

In-state runner George Payne picks USM

Southern Miss has secured a verbal commitment from running back George Payne (Mobile, Ala./Saint Luke's Episcopal School), multiple sources report.

Payne, who also had an offer from Samford, is his high school's first Division 1 athletic commitment and he is very excited to play major college football, according to

"I just feel blessed to have this opportunity. I know a lot of guys don't get a chance to go to college, let alone play college football. This feels great."

As a senior, Payne rushed for 2,424 yards and 34 touchdowns, leading his team to the playoffs for the first time.

Coveted defensive tackle Jacob Chaffin (Hoover, Ala./Spain Park) announced for South Alabama, multiple sources report.

Arkansas State, Georgia State, Jacksonville State, Middle Tennessee, Samford, Southern Miss, Troy, Tulane and Western Kentucky also extended scholarship offers to the 6-foot-2, 260-pounder. Auburn, Mississippi State and Tennessee showed interest.

"Once I went down there for the first time I fell in love with it,'' Chaffin told the Press-Register. "Everything is first class. Everything they've got going there is just amazing -- the facilities, the coaches. I love the coaches there, coach [Joey] Jones, coach [Bill] Clark [defensive coordinator]; they're all great people. Coach Jones has done an incredible job with the program and I want to be a part of the history of bringing South to the top and being one of the elite programs in the country.''

The Jaguars have seven pledges for 2013.

Outside linebacker Josh Kimberlin (Southaven, Miss./Southern Baptist Ed Center) has ended the process after committing to Samford, the Commercial Appeal reports.

Kimberlin was wowed by Samford's campus according to his father Brad:

"They just have an awesome campus. You probably won't find better facilities on the FCS level than what they have right now, and they're not done yet with all that they want to do."

Kimberlin canceled his scheduled visit to Richmond and he also had offers from Arkansas and Arkansas State.

App. State adds tight end

The Mountaineers have secured a verbal commitment from two-star tight end Barrett Burns (Woodstock, Ga./Etowah), multiple sources report.

Burns really enjoyed his time at Appalachian State according to the Cherokee Ledger-News:

"The football environment there is crazy - everybody shows up to the games - and it's a great academic school as well. Those were all the things I was looking for when I was hunting for the right place to be."

The 6-foot-3, 230-pounder also had offers from Samford, Rice and Arkansas State
