Illinois secures LB Austin Roberts

Class of 2014 inside linebacker Austin Roberts (Rice Lake, Wis./Rice Lake) committed Thursday to sign with the Illini, multiple sources report.

Roberts was heavily recruited by non-BCS, FCS and Ivy League schools. Air Force, Army, Central Michigan, Columbia, Harvard, Illinois State, North Dakota State, Pennsylvania, South Dakota State, Wyoming and Yale extended offers to the 6-foot-3, 230-pound prospect.

He registered 152 total tackles, seven sacks and an interception during his junior campaign.

Illinois now has six pledges.

Petrino lures DB Marcus Ward

Senior Marcus Ward (Vestavia Hills, Ala./Vestavia Hills) has committed to sign with new head coach Bobby Petrino and Western Kentucky, multiple sources report.

Naturally, Ward and his parents had some reservations about playing for Petrino following his ugly departure from Arkansas. But after speaking with Petrino, the family was convinced.

"Really good guy," Ward told "He had a great personality. He seemed big on family and that good stuff. That swayed me and my parents. My parents loved the talk. My mom and dad are all on board with me with this."

Adam Strouss makes Ivy League pledge

Quarterback/defensive back Adam Strouss (Merion, Pa./Episcopal) is set to continue his career in the Ivy League after committing to sign with Penn, the Philadelphia Inquirer reports.

Strouss, a 6-foot-2, 191-pound senior who is being recruited to play safety for the Quakers, was also courted by Colgate, Princeton and Yale.

"As a team, we participated in a four-day camp at Penn over the summer," he said. "Coach [Al] Bagnoli was one of the first coaches to come up to me. He definitely made me feel wanted. And I loved the school, all the coaches and the campus."

Strouss registered a 4.97 40-yard dash, 4.38 20-yard shuttle, 31.5-inch vertical and 80.19 SPARQ this spring at a Nike Combine.

Senior quarterack Jesse Ertz (Mediapolis, Iowa) pledged to continue his career in the Big 12 for Kansas State, reports.

According to, the 6-foot-2, 171-pound Ertz was also recruited by programs such as Iowa, Iowa State, North Dakota, Penn and South Dakota State.

Before his junior year, Ertz posted combine-verified figures, including a 4.99 40-yard dash, 4.94 20-yard shuttle and 27.1-inch vertical.

Kansas State has six commitments.

Xavier Phillips (Fort Worth, Texas/All Saints Episcopal) has become the fourth 2013 pledge at linebacker for Baylor, multiple sources report. Four-stars Raaquan Davis (Heath, Texas/Rockwall-Heath), Travon Blanchard (Orange, Texas/West Orange Stark) and D.J. Green (Mesquite, Texas/Horn) are the other LB's on board.

The 6-foot-1, 202-pound Phillips collected offers from some of the most prestigious academic institutions across the country such as Air Force, Colorado, Columbia, Cornell, Dartmouth, Duke, Georgia Tech, Harvard, Houston, Kansas, Navy, Penn, Princeton, Rice, TCU, Tulane, Tulsa, Central Florida, UTEP, Vanderbilt, Wake Forest and Yale.

He registered an electronically-timed 4.8 40-yard dash, 4.44 20-yard shuttle, 27.7-inch vertical and 78.72 SPARQ this spring on the Nike Combine circuit.

Phillips is the 13th verbal in Baylor's 21st-ranked recruiting class. All 13 players are from Texas.

John Tsimis, a 5-foot-11, 180-pound wide receiver, has pledged to sign with Rutgers, multiple sources report.

The Scarlet Knights are taking Tsimis despite that fact that he won't play football as a senior. Tsimis suffered a torn ACL at the Baltimore Nike Combine on May 12. reports that East Carolina, Harvard, Penn, Princeton and Temple also extended scholarship offers to Tsimis.

He is the fourth 2013 commitment for Rutgers and third from inside state lines.

Two-star quarterback Alex Matthews (Lake Oswego, Ore.) has committed to play in the Ivy League for Penn, according to The Oregonian.

Matthews, a 6-foot-2, 200-pound prospect, claimed early offers from Colorado, Vanderbilt, Washington, Washington State, Utah, Montana and Eastern Washington.

As a senior, he lead Lake Oswego to a Class 6A state championship and perfect 14-0 record. Matthews completed 70.1 of his attempts for 2,627 yards, 24 touchdowns and just two interceptions.

His older brother Jay is a safety at Washington State. Their father, Mark, played in the defensive backfield for Vanderbilt in the early '80's.

Running back Dalton Crossan (Lake Ronkonkoma, N.Y./Sachem) has given a verbal commitment to New Hampshire, ESPN's Roger Brown reports.

Buffalo, Fordham, Pennsylvania, Stony Brook and Syracuse also offered Crossan.

The 5-foot-11, 185-pounder showed well on the combine circuit, as he ran a 4.69 40-yard dash, a 4.2 short shuttle and had a 30.3-inch vertical leap.

Crossan is also a top lacrosse prospect.

Villanova has reached down into Florida for a commitment from two-star inside linebacker Cameron McCurry (Orange Park, Fla./Fleming Island), according to McCurry was on campus over the weekend for an official visit.

He selected the FCS Wildcats over scholarship offers from Harvard, Jacksonville, Penn and Wofford.

The 5-foot-11, 215-pound McCurry has posted some pretty impressive combine figures including a 4.84 40-yard dash, 4.35 20-yard shuttle and 30.5-inch vertical.

Villanova has six verbals.
