NCF On The Trail: Hawaii Warriors

The Early Offer is RecruitingNation's regular feature, giving you a daily dose of recruiting in the mornings. Monday’s offerings: After a few weeks to recover from the holiday that was signing day, it’s always interesting to analyze the data to get a better understanding of what really happened. This past Friday, I took a look at the teams that saw the biggest gains from 2013 to 2014. But what were some of the teams that were on the other end of the spectrum?
The Early Offer is RecruitingNation's latest feature, giving you a daily dose of recruiting in the mornings. Today's offerings: Despite a cryptic tweet that worried TCU fans, four-star linebacker Jimmie Swain IV has good news for Horned Frog faithful; Pittsburgh scores a nice recruiting victory over Penn State; and Oregon State and Washington State commits and an ESPN Junior 300 prospect will be on display Friday on ESPNU.

Defensive end Tyree Owens (Oviedo, Fla./Oviedo) and pair of offensive tackles -- Jamie Herr (Elkton, Md./Eastern Christian) and Walter Rauterkus (Avon, Ohio/Avon) -- each committed this week to West Virginia, according to multiple reports.

Owens, a 6-foot-4, 236-pound prospect, selected the Mountaineers over scholarship offers from Boston College, Cincinnati, Duke, Eastern Illinois, Florida International, Florida Atlantic, Georgia Tech, Iowa State, Marshall, Minnesota, North Carolina State, Troy, Virginia, Wake Forest and Wisconsin.

He posted an electronically-timed 4.88 40-yard dash, 4.62 20-yard shuttle, 32.5-inch vertical, 34-foot power throw and 81.78 SPARQ this spring at a Nike combine.

"West Virginia had the best family feel," Owens told the Orlando Sentinel. "When I got there (on a visit this past weekend) they welcomed me with open arms and it was everything I could have hoped for... just great the whole time I was there."

Herr, one of many FBS prospects from Eastern Christian Academy, was also offered by Boston College, Connecticut, Delaware, Hawaii, Pittsburgh, Rutgers and Temple. He's 6-5 and 265 pounds.

Ohio was Rauterkus' only other scholarship offer. Programs including Ball State, Bowling Green, Illinois, Iowa, Michigan State, Nebraska and Purdue also recruited the 6-6, 285-pound prospect.

West Virginia's 2014 class is at 11 players.

Busy Saturday for Arizona

The Wildcats picked up four pledges on Saturday. According to multiple reports, Darrell Cloy Jr. (La Habra, Calif./La Habra), J.R. Hunt (Chandler, Ariz./Chandler), Kwesi Mashack (Norco, Calif./Norco) and Trevor Wood (Scottsdale, Ariz./Chaparral) committed.

Cloy is a 6-foot-3, 226-pound tight end-H, rated as a three-star prospect and the 14th-best player at his position in this class. Colorado and Colorado State were his other scholarship offers. Michigan, Nebraska, Oregon, UCLA and Washington expressed some interest.

Hunt, a 6-3, 199-pound safety, selected Arizona over offers from rival Arizona State and Montana. ESPN RecruitingNation rates Hunt as a three-star.

Mashack also carries a three-star grade. Hawaii was his other offer, while California, San Diego State and UCLA showed interest in the 5-9, 182-pound athlete.

Following his evaluation, Wood might end up as the highest-rated prospect of the group. The 6-6, 240-pound rising senior tight end was also offered by Alabama, Arizona State, Boise State, Kansas State, Michigan State, Nebraska, Oklahoma, Oregon, Oregon State, UCLA, Utah and Washington.

Arizona's class has grown to 18 following the flurry over commitments this weekend.

Class of 2014 prospect Kyle Christiansen (Hyrum, Utah/Mountain Crest) committed Monday to sign with Utah, the Deseret News reports.

Brigham Young, Hawaii and Utah State also extended scholarship offers to the 6-foot-3, 315-pound prospect, who earned first-team all-state accolades last fall.

"I love Utah and always have," he said. "I love the football program there. I love the coaches. The atmosphere is awesome. I can't wait to get down there and be part of it."

Christiansen plans to graduate from high school in January and embark on an LDS mission before joining the Utes.

He's Utah's seventh pledge for 2014.

Rising senior defensive end Deonte Holden (Hyattsville, Md./DeMatha Catholic) decided Monday to continue his career with the North Carolina State Wolfpack, according to multiple reports.

He was recruited by NC State cornerbacks coach Richard McNutt.

Boston College, Charlotte, Cincinnati, Duke, East Carolina, Hawaii, Iowa, Marshall, Old Dominion, Temple, Toledo, Virginia and Wake Forest were his other scholarship offers. Georgia Tech, Maryland, Miami (Fla.), Penn State and Rutgers also pursued the 6-foot-4, 213-pound Holden.

N.C. State has 21 players on board for 2014.

Badgers' Andersen reaches back into Utah

8:22
AM ET
First-year Wisconsin head coach Gary Andersen, previously in charge of Utah State's program, snared a commitment Thursday from his old recruiting grounds. According to multiple sources, Ula Tolutau (Salt Lake City/East) picked the Badgers.

The Salt Lake Tribune reports that Andersen first began pursuing Tolutau when he was still at Utah State. Tolutau is the first Utah prospect to be lured to the Big Ten by the former Aggies coach.

Tolutau, a 6-foot-1, 225-pound high school running back, is classified as an athlete and could land at another position in Madison, Wis. His primary recruiter was Wisconsin defensive line coach Chad Kauha'aha'a.

Brigham Young, Hawaii, Utah and Utah State also extended scholarship offers. Oregon State and Stanford, among others, expressed interest.

The Badgers have six pledges for 2014.

Kentucky dips into Baltimore for Walker

8:14
AM ET
Our Lady of Good Counsel (Olney, Md.) safety Kobie Walker is set to play in the Southeastern Conference for Kentucky, the Louisville (Ky.) Courier-Journal reports.

"I don't think anybody has ever come out of Baltimore to commit to Kentucky," he said. "I feel good. It started a trend to hopefully get some more guys out of the area and my schools to go there."

Walker selected the Wildcats over scholarship offers from Boston College, Hawaii, Miami (Fla.), North Carolina State, Oklahoma State, Old Dominion, Rutgers, Syracuse and Wisconsin.

Other programs, including East Carolina, Maryland, Virginia Tech and West Virginia, recruited the 6-foot-3, 188-pound prospect.

"As soon as I stepped on campus, I fell in love," Walker said of his visit to Lexington, Ky., for the Blue-White spring game. "The fans, the coaching, the players that are already there showed a lot of love to me. My dad and I liked it."

Walker registered a 4.75-second 40-yard dash, 4.45-second 20-yard shuttle and 30-inch vertical at this year's National Under Armour Combine in Orlando.

Kentucky has seven players on board for 2014, including five from Ohio and in-state ESPN 150 quarterback Drew Barker (Hebron, Ky./Conner).
Offensive guard Tony Feo announced his signing with the Oklahoma Sooners on Thursday, but he won’t be the only big man from Fullerton (Calif.) College headed across the country to play football this summer.

The Hornets will also send defensive tackle Melvin Lewis, all 6-foot-4 and 315 pounds of him, to Kentucky. Lewis held offers from Hawaii, Miami (Fla.) and Washington, but decided to take his time with the process and eventually signed with Kentucky on April 28.

The Wildcats initially made contact in late February and brought Lewis out on an official visit for their spring game April 12.
