NC State beefs up defensive front

6-foot-2, 302-pound defensive tackle Deshaywn Middleton (Winston-Salem, N.C./Parkland) has committed to sign with North Carolina State, according to multiple reports.

His other offers include Appalachian State, Citadel, Clemson, Duke, East Carolina, Elon, Hampton, Old Dominion and Wake Forest. Auburn, Georgia Tech, North Carolina, Vanderbilt and Virginia showed interest.

Middleton has posted an electronically-timed 5.27 40-yard dash, 5.13 20-yard shuttle, 23.3-inch vertical and 66.84 SPARQ at a Nike Combine.

NC State now has 22 verbals, which constitutes the country's largest 2014 class. The Wolfpack's group of commitments is ranked 26th by ESPN RecruitingNation.

Jerome Dews talks Tennessee verbal

Sleeper outside linebacker Jerome Dews (Oxon Hill, Md./Potomac), a 6-foot-3, 197-pound prospect, committed this week to sign with Tennessee, according to multiple reports.

Prior to receiving the Volunteers' offer, Dews was only holding scholarships from lesser-known programs such as Delaware, Hampton, James Madison, Robert Morris, St. Francis and Temple.

"For them to be an SEC school and take that chance on me with me having no other big offers shows they're nothing but real people," he told the Washington Post. "They don't care about publicity and all that stuff, the politics. They like me, and they don't care about none of that other stuff."

Dews continued, "Man, I love everything about Tennessee. I just love the coaches. … You don't usually fall in love that quick. It's crazy. I can't even explain how happy I am."

Last season, he recorded 14 sacks and caught 15 passes for 220 yards and two touchdowns.

This spring, Dews registered an electronically-timed 5.47 40-yard dash, 4.22 20-yard shuttle, 25.7-inch vertical and 31-foot power throw at a Nike event.

He is commitment No. 17 for the Volunteers.

CB DaiQuan Lawrence picks Wake Forest

The Demon Deacons collected a verbal Tuesday from cornerback DaiQuan Lawrence (Chesapeake, Va./Oscar Smith), multiple sources report.

Hampton, Norfolk State, North Carolina Central and Virginia also extended scholarship offers to the 6-foot, 180-pound prospect. Virginia Tech showed interest.

Lawrence is commitment No. 3 for Wake Forest.

Indiana gets on the board for 2014

Defensive tackle Michael Barwick (Cincinnati/Summit Country Day) has become the Indiana Hoosiers' first Class of 2014 commitment, multiple sources report. He was recruited by Indiana run game coordinator/offensive line coach Greg Frey.

Akron, Ball State, Bowling Green, Buffalo, Hampton, Kent State, Toledo and Western Michigan also extended scholarship offers to the 6-foot-1, 290-pound prospect.

Indiana is Barwick's only BCS conference offer at this time, but other programs, including Cincinnati, Illinois, Michigan, Ohio State, Oregon, Purdue, West Virginia and Wisconsin, expressed some interest.

He'll be included as part of ESPN RecruitingNation's next rankings update.

Cavaliers add defender J.J. Jackson

According to multiple sources, defensive end/outside linebacker J.J. Jackson (Purcellville, Va./Woodgrove) has pledged to sign with Virginia.

The 6-foot-4, 220-pound talent selected the Cavaliers over scholarship offers from Duke, Hampton, Ohio, Old Dominion and Yale along with interest from Maryland, among others.

Jackson registered 72 tackles and 13 sacks during his junior campaign.

He is Virginia's fourth Class of 2014 verbal.

Old Dominion is on the board for 2014

Defensive tackle Brandon Tyson (Midlothian, Va./Clover Hill) has committed to suit up for Old Dominion, multiple sources report.

Hampton also extended a scholarship offer to the 6-foot-1, 315-pound prospect, and other programs such as East Carolina showed interest.

Demetri McGill picks the Terps

Three-star defensive tackle Demetri McGill (Virginia Beach, Va./Ocean Lakes) is latest senior to jump on board with Maryland, according to multiple reports.

The 6-foot, 290-pound prospect also received scholarship offers from Charlotte, Cincinnati, Connecticut, East Carolina, Hampton, James Madison, Marshall, Ohio and Old Dominion. North Carolina, Virginia and Virginia Tech showed some interest.

ESPN states in its evaluation, "McGill is not flashy, but is a tough kid and fairly heady player who can be a solid productive run defender and at worst should be able to offer some quality depth."

Maryland now holds 17 pledges for 2013.

Charlotte adds Justin Bridges-Thompson

Coveted outside linebacker Justin Bridges-Thompson (Spartanburg, S.C./Spartanburg) turned down several offers from BCS conference schools in favor of emerging FBS program Charlotte, according to sources.

Arizona, North Carolina State, Pittsburgh and Wake Forest offered the 6-foot-2, 194-pound two-star prospect. Memphis, where Bridges-Thompson was scheduled to make an official visit this weekend, and Hampton also extended tenders.

The 6-foot-3, 244-pound D'Avanzo also collected scholarship offers from Hampton, James Madison, Massachusetts, Monmouth and Old Dominion. Maryland and Rutgers recruited the rising senior.

D'Avanzo posted an electronically-timed 5.00 40-yard dash, 4.68 20-yard shuttle, 25.3-inch vertical and 68.43 SPARQ on the Nike Combine circuit this spring.

The Monarchs have picked up a commitment from rising senior wide receiver Kevin Privott (Ahoskie, N.C./Hertford County), multiple sources report.

According to, Charlotte, Furman, Hampton, Howard, Liberty, Navy and North Carolina Central also extended scholarship offers to the 6-foot-1, 182-pound prospect. Other programs including Duke, East Carolina, North Carolina State and Wake Forest showed interest.

Old Dominion, which will begin playing a full Football Bowl Subdivision schedule in Conference USA for the 2013 season, has four players on board for this recruiting cycle.

Two more for Maryland

Athlete DeAndre Lane (Baltimore, Md./Catonsville) and defensive lineman Michael Williams (Severn, Md./Archbishop Spalding) have joined the commitment parade to Maryland, multiple sources report.

Maryland extended Lane his first offer and he quickly accepted. The 5-foot-8, 170-pound prospect was also recruited by James Madison, Lafayette, Lehigh, North Carolina State, Temple, Towson, Wake Forest, West Virginia and William and Mary.

Last season, Lane rushed for more than 1,700 yards and scored more than 20 times. Prior to his junior year, Lane posted a 4.61 40-yard dash, 4.4 20-yard shuttle and 28-inch vertical on the combine circuit.
