NCF On The Trail: East Carolina Pirates

The addition of No. 1 2016 TE Isaac Nauta shows that the Florida State recruiting machine shows no signs of slowing down. Plus, Tennessee continues to impress with its 2015 defensive class.

UA jersey tour: Louie Zervos

TARPON SPRINGS, Fla. -- Three-star kicker Louis Zervos was presented with his Under Armour All-America Game jersey Wednesday afternoon in a ceremony sponsored by American Family Insurance. The ceremony took place in front of family, friends and teammates at the Tarpon Springs High School gymnasium in Tarpon Springs, Florida.

Zervos, the ninth-ranked kicker in the country, said he felt honored to be selected to one of the top All-American games in the country.

"It's a great honor," Zervos said. "I know a lot of top athletes from around the country play in this game so it’s a big honor to be selected for this game."

Normally players are selected for the prestigious game by playing well on the field, but for kickers the process is a little different. On-field performance still counts but the kickers also have to attend a camp and compete for a position.

"We went to a camp. Two punters were selected based on how they perform," Zervos explained. "One kicker was selected which was the automatic bid and then me -- I had to compete with someone else for my spot. I won it with a 55-yarder."

Zervos is 6-of-10 on field goals this season with a long of 46 yards and last season he went 9-of-13 with a long of 49. Despite his excellent two years kicking, the talented kicker has yet to receive any scholarship offers -- but he feels a few may be coming his way soon.

"I've been talking to Florida," he said. "I've been trying to get a visit set up there. Purdue, I'm hoping they are going to offer me sometime soon. East Carolina, I went on a visit there for their homecoming game and still waiting to hear from then, and then Virginia is showing interest."

Six questions with Louie Zervos

Who was the best kicker you ever saw play in the Under Armour game?

Zervos: Sean Covingon. He was a kicker in 2011. He played on my brother's soccer team, so I was rooting for him.

If you could start a team with any other player in your class who would it be?

Zervos: Yianni Mehas, he's a receiver on our team. I'd start a team with him.

What's your earliest football memory?

Zervos: Kicking my game-winning field goal in eighth grade against Dunedin. That was the first year I played. I played soccer before that.

What's something that most people don't know about you?

Zervos: I don't actually play video games and I love the watching the "Walking Dead." It's my favorite show.

What are you looking forward to the most during the Under Amour week in Orlando?

Zervos: I'm looking forward to playing against playing with guys from all over the country and going against the top athletes. I'm just really looking forward to kicking for Under Armour.

What would you like to improve on before you get to college?

Zervos: I'd like to improve on my power and distance on my kickoffs. I'm set for field goals right now.

SUGAR HILL, Ga. -- With the world’s busiest airport down the road, quarterbacks from across the country flocked to the Atlanta Elite 11 regional camp on Friday at Gary Pirkle Park, including several highly regarded passers from outside the Southeast.

Part of that group was Indianapolis Decatur Central’s Tommy Stevens. The 6-foot-4, 190-pound Stevens traveled more than 500 miles, but it was worth every mile because he proved he has the tools to compete with the best of the best.

HAVELOCK, N.C. – Senior running back Derrell Scott (Havelock, N.C./Havelock) committed to Tennessee in front of a packed auditorium on Monday.
For some programs, losing a record-setting player could make the following season a tough one.

At Havelock, however, the future remains bright for the three-time defending 3A state champions.

Not only does the winner of 47 of the last 48 games return Michael Bowman, ranked No. 146 in the ESPN Junior 300, but also two of the top sophomores in the country.

QB Wolford mulls Penn State offer

It was supposed to be a normal week for 2014 quarterback John Wolford (Jacksonville, Fla./Bishop Kenny), who has been committed to East Carolina since September. He thought his recruitment was over and he would just prepare for the next stage in his career.

[+] EnlargeJohn Wolford
Tim Yocum PhotographyThe chance to work with Bill O'Brien at Penn State could change John Wolford's mind about his commitment to ECU.
That all changed, though, with a phone call from the Penn State coaches on Wednesday.

“I hadn’t been talking to them at all, it all just happened last week,” he said. “They saw my film and I talked to Coach [Bill] O’Brien and Coach [Tony] Midget. He came down on Wednesday and then I talked to O’Brien that night and he offered me.”

Wake tops state rivals for WR Barbour

PM ET
Three-star wide receiver Jaylan Barbour (Monroe, N.C./Monroe) has ended the recruiting process and will play for Wake Forest, according to the Enquirer-Journal.

Duke and East Carolina also were squarely in the mix for Barbour's verbal. Appalachian State, Charlotte, North Carolina, North Carolina State, South Carolina and West Virginia were his other scholarship offers.

"I had been thinking about it lately, and I decided to call and tell them I was coming there," he told the Enquirer-Journal. "I visited last weekend, and I really enjoyed the campus. The coaches showed me a lot of love. I thought about it a lot this week."

"I liked that everything's within walking distance," Barbour added. "I observed a practice, and everybody was working hard and getting along. ... I finally got my decision off my chest, and I'm good now."

Barbour arrived on the scene as a sophomore when he caught 44 passes for 861 yards and 10 touchdowns. The 5-foot-10, 164-pound prospect missed time last fall due to an ankle injury but still hauled in 42 balls for 521 yards and 3 scores.

Before his junior year, Barbour posted an electronically timed 4.97 40-yard dash, 4.49 20-yard shuttle, 27.3-inch vertical and 59.28 SPARQ at a Nike event.

The Demon Deacons' class now holds nine pledges.

S Mike Rogers picks UCF, not done yet

PM ET
According to the Orlando Sentinel, three-star safety Mike Rogers (Smyrna, Ga./Campbell) has committed to UCF.

"The campus was really nice," he said. "But what called my attention was the coaches and everything and the academics. They were really focused on school work and football. They make sure you get a degree and do something you love at the same time. That caught my attention."

However, Rogers added that he hasn’t completed “shut down” the recruiting process. Charlotte, Cincinnati, Clemson, East Carolina, Georgia Southern, Georgia State, Mississippi State, Missouri, Old Dominion, Ole Miss and Syracuse also offered the 6-foot, 180-pound defender.

He’s the 12th 2014 pledge for the Knights and their top commit on the defensive side of the ball.

Shabazz selected the Blue Devils over scholarship offers from Cincinnati, East Carolina, Georgia State, Southern Miss, UCF and Vanderbilt. Georgia Tech and Michigan State showed interest.

This spring, he registered an electronically-timed 4.90 40-yard dash, 4.80 20-yard shuttle, 31.2-inch vertical, 33.5-foot power throw and 74.58 SPARQ at at Nike Combine.

The 6-foot-2, 228-pound prospect, who will be evaluated soon, is commitment No. 13 for Duke.
