PM ET
Each Wednesday, ESPN RecruitingNation updates its national class rankings and its conference class rankings.

The American is led by a pair of teams on their way out of the league. Rutgers, who will move to the Big Ten, leads the conference with a class that is headlined by four in-state ESPN 300 prospects. Louisville, who will leave for the ACC, is close behind the Scarlet Knights in both the top 40 and AAC ranks. The USF Bulls, who recently picked up three-star ATH Kendall Sawyer, are at No. 3.

1. Rutgers, 24 commits: The Scarlet Knights sit at No. 18 in the class rankings with a class that includes four ESPN 300 prospects. Rutgers is loading up at the skill positions with wide receivers No. 113 overall Saeed Blacknall (Manalapan, N.J./Manalapan) and No. 136 Adonis Jennings (Erial, N.J./Timber Creek Regional), along with running back and No. 286 Jonathan Hilliman (Jersey City, N.J./Saint Peter's Prep). Three-star playmaker Isaiah McKenzie (Plantation, Fla./American Heritage) and wide Kendrick Edwards (Miami/Norland) are two out of the Sunshine State the Scarlet Knights covet.

Three-star athlete JaQuan Davidson (Elizabeth, Pa./Forward) has given his pledge to the Panthers, according to multiple reports.

UConn, Illinois, Temple, West Virginia, Western Michigan and Youngstown State also extended scholarship offers to the 6-foot-4, 172-pound prospect, who was recruited to play receiver by Pitt.

His high school coach, Mike LeDonne, told the TribLive.com, "Pitt did a heck of a job. He feels comfortable with the staff."

Davidson, who plays quarterback for Elizabeth Forward, had thrown for 489 yards and eight touchdowns and rushed for 392 more yards prior to Thursday night's game.

Pittsburgh has 18 players on board for 2014.
The Early Offer is RecruitingNation's regular feature, giving you a daily dose of recruiting in the mornings. Today's offerings: Lost in the shuffle of the news at USC was that Ohio State made a major impression with key targets visiting for the Wisconsin game; whoever is hired at UConn will inherit a difficult situation but with upside possibilities; junior college receiver D'haquille Williams remains committed to Auburn but is looking at others.

DT Chris Nelson makes the call

August, 8, 2013
8/08/13
9:38
AM ET
Highly-coveted defensive tackle Chris Nelson (Lakeland, Fla./Victory Christian Academy) pledged Wednesday to sign with Louisville, according to multiple reports.

Connecticut, Duke, Florida Atlantic, Iowa, Kentucky, Middle Tennessee, Missouri, Nebraska, North Carolina State, Pittsburgh, Purdue, South Alabama, South Florida, UCF, Virginia and Wake Forest also offered.

Nelson, a 6-foot-2, 280-pound three-star prospect, registered 150 total tackles and 10 sacks during his junior campaign.

The Cardinals now have 25 verbals in their Top 25 recruiting class.

Tom Rodrick commits to UConn

August, 8, 2013
8/08/13
9:26
AM ET
Leicester High senior fullback/linebacker Tom Rodrick has verbally committed to UConn for the 2014 season, he announced Wednesday on Twitter.

The 6-foot-3, 240-pound Rodrick has been an integral part of the Wolverines these past two seasons, helping them capture a MIAA Division 5 Super Bowl title in 2011 and a return trip to the title game in 2012. This past season, he led the Wolverines in tackles (92) and led Central Mass. in sacks (14). Offensively, he recorded 437 yards and eight touchdowns from the fullback position. At camps this offseason, Rodrick has recorded 40-yard dash times as low as 4.57 seconds.

At the time of his commitment, Rodrick also had an offer from UMass, while Rhode Island and Villanova expressed varying degrees of interest. He visited UConn's practice on Wednesday, after which he made his pledge to the Huskies' 2014 recruiting class.

"It just felt right," Rodrick said. "I really liked practice, I like [head coach Paul] Pasqualoni and I like their linebackers coach [Jon Wholley], I like how the team is put together."

According to Wolverines head coach Tim Griffiths, the program has never sent a player to a Division 1 FBS program before Rodrick. To be the first, Rodrick said, "is an honor".

"We've got so many people who have gone through Leicester that we still talk about...We've had so many awesome players, it's an honor to be the first," Rodrick said.

At UConn, Rodrick will likely fit into a hybrid edge defensive player, playing mostly outside linebacker but potentially playing a five-technique defensive end on third downs. At Leicester, Rodrick rarely plays with his hand in the ground, but he would like to improve on his pass rush technique before arriving in Storrs.

"As a defensive end I'd like to put on a couple more pounds, up to 250," he said. "I have a few [moves], rip and swim, stuff like that, but I need to work on my hammer a little bit better. That was something I really liked about Coach Pasqualoni, he's coached so many great defensive ends."

Rodrick admits the decision between UConn and UMass was a tough one, as his brother currently attends the latter as a student.

"It was pretty big, to be honest," he said. "But with that said, UMass did a very good job recruiting me. They sent me 15 letters yesterday, from the whole coaching staff. ... It was definitely [a tough decision], especially because the coaches at UMass seemed like genuine guys. I've got nothing bad to say about UMass at all, it was actually kinda tough telling them I'm going to UConn."

Including resigns, the Huskies have 11 commitments for 2014.

Four-star Lewis commits to Georgia Tech

AM ET
Terrell Lewis (Ocoee, Fla./Ocoee), a high school safety projected to play outside linebacker in college, has pledged to sign with Georgia Tech, according to multiple sources.

Lewis, who did not hold a scholarship offer in mid-March, rapidly ascended on recruiting boards and was sought by several BCS conference programs. UConn, Iowa State, Kentucky, LSU, Miami (Fla.), Nebraska, South Florida, Syracuse, Troy and UCF each pursued the 6-foot-2, 206-pound defender.

Last spring, Lewis posted an electronically timed 4.75 40-yard dash, 4.37 20-yard shuttle, 32.6-inch vertical and 82.35 SPARQ at a Nike event.

The Yellow Jackets now have 15 commitments.

AM ET

Defensive end Tyree Owens (Oviedo, Fla./Oviedo) and pair of offensive tackles -- Jamie Herr (Elkton, Md./Eastern Christian) and Walter Rauterkus (Avon, Ohio/Avon) -- each committed this week to West Virginia, according to multiple reports.

Owens, a 6-foot-4, 236-pound prospect, selected the Mountaineers over scholarship offers from Boston College, Cincinnati, Duke, Eastern Illinois, Florida International, Florida Atlantic, Georgia Tech, Iowa State, Marshall, Minnesota, North Carolina State, Troy, Virginia, Wake Forest and Wisconsin.

He posted an electronically-timed 4.88 40-yard dash, 4.62 20-yard shuttle, 32.5-inch vertical, 34-foot power throw and 81.78 SPARQ this spring at a Nike combine.

"West Virginia had the best family feel," Owens told the Orlando Sentinel. "When I got there (on a visit this past weekend) they welcomed me with open arms and it was everything I could have hoped for... just great the whole time I was there."

Herr, one of many FBS prospects from Eastern Christian Academy, was also offered by Boston College, Connecticut, Delaware, Hawaii, Pittsburgh, Rutgers and Temple. He's 6-5 and 265 pounds.

Ohio was Rauterkus' only other scholarship offer. Programs including Ball State, Bowling Green, Illinois, Iowa, Michigan State, Nebraska and Purdue also recruited the 6-6, 285-pound prospect.

West Virginia's 2014 class is at 11 players.

Offensive tackle Trey Rutherford (Kent, Conn./Kent) is slated to play in the American Athletic Conference for Connecticut, according to multiple reports.

The Huskies are his only scholarship offer. Rivals.com lists Michigan State as having shown interest. The 6-foot-5, 270-pound prospect was also recruited by Buffalo and Syracuse, according to Scout.com.

Including re-signs from 2013, UConn has nine players committed for 2014.

Speedy Garrett Johnson picks Kentucky

AM ET
The Kentucky Wildcats secured a commitment from three-star wide receiver Garrett Johnson (Winter Garden, Fla./West Orange), according to multiple reports.

Arizona, Boston College, Connecticut, Georgia Tech, Iowa State, Marshall, Northwestern, South Florida and Vanderbilt also offered scholarships to the 5-foot-10, 168-pound Johnson.

Clemson, Florida, Florida State, Louisville, Miami (Fla.), North Carolina, North Carolina State and UCF also recruited the under-the-radar prospect.

Johnson first gained recognition with a huge sophomore season. In 2011, he caught 58 passes for 1,014 yards (17.5 average) and 11 touchdowns.

He then displayed great athleticism this spring on the Nike Combine circuit, posting an electronically-timed 4.61 40-yard dash, 4.10 20-yard shuttle, 33.1-inch vertical, 31-foot power throw and 81.33 SPARQ.

Kentucky has 21 commitments for 2014. The Wildcats' class is ranked No. 13 by RecruitingNation.

GT gets RB Kinlaw, OL Stickler

7/27/13
12:25
PM ET
Caleb Kinlaw (Goose Creek, S.C./Goose Creek) and Jake Stickler (Bradenton, Fla./Manatee) have committed to Georgia Tech. Both verbals were reported by multiple outlets.

Kinlaw is a 5-foot-11, 184-pound three-star running back and the cousin of former Georgia Tech quarterback Joe Hamilton.

He picked GT over scholarship offers from Arizona, Clemson, Florida International, North Carolina, South Carolina and Tennessee. Kansas State, Nebraska, Vanderbilt and Virginia Tech also recruited him.

Kinlaw registered an electronically-timed 4.75 40-yard dash, 4.41 20-yard shuttle, 32.5-inch vertical, 32.5-foot power throw and 79,35 SPARQ this offseason on the Nike Combine circuit.

Stickler, a 6-foot-5, 281-pound offensive tackle, selected the Yellow Jackets over Missouri.

"They're both good schools, but the curriculum at Georgia Tech is more what I'm looking to study. I'm undecided, but I'm leaning more toward Business right now," he told the Atlanta Journal Constitution.

Baylor, Connecticut, Marshall and South Florida were his other scholarship offers. Auburn, Florida, Iowa, Nebraska and North Carolina State expressed interest.

The Yellow Jackets' 2014 class now holds 14 commitments.
