NCF On The Trail: Arkansas State Red Wolves

Weekend recruiting wrap: SEC

AM ET
There was plenty of recruiting news in the Southeastern Conference over the weekend. Tennessee hosted several visitors for its exciting game against Georgia, and there were some impressive high school performances as well. Here is the latest news around the SEC.

Biggest commitment: Alabama beat out rival Auburn for Ronnie Clark, the No. 12 athlete and No. 96 overall prospect in the Class of 2014. The Tide continue to have a stronghold on the No. 1-ranked recruiting class in the country. Alabama now has 21 verbal commitments, including 15 who are ranked in the ESPN 300.

Kansas gets combine standout Hartzog

AM ET
Three-star wide receiver Bobby Hartzog (Houston/Westside) committed Saturday to play in the Big 12 for Kansas, according to multiple reports.

Hartzog, who has an Oct. 18 official visit to Lawrence, Kan. scheduled, was recruited by Jayhawks defensive line coach Buddy Wyatt.

He originally committed to Houston in June, switched to Utah later that month but dropped the Utes in August.

Arkansas State, Iowa State, Lamar, McNeese State, Northwestern State, Texas State, Tulane and UTSA also extended scholarship offers to the 5-foot-11, 182-pound prospect.

Hartzog posted outstanding combine figures this spring on the Nike circuit. His marks included an electronically-timed 4.49 40-yard dash, 4.16 20-yard shuttle, 37.4-inch vertical, 37-foot power throw and 110.91 SPARQ.

The Jayhawks now have nine players on board for 2014. Their class includes two ESPN 300 recruits, one four-star and six three-stars.

SEC recruiting mailbag

September, 27, 2013
9/27/13
11:00
AM ET
It’s time to dip into the SEC recruiting mailbag and answer your questions. Because of the amount of questions we’ve received, we won’t be able to get to all of them today -- but we encourage you to ask again next week by tweeting your questions to @DerekTysonESPN or @HamiltonESPN and use the hashtag #SECRecruiting.

@UTSportsAction: Are the #SEC schools recruiting in states that are not known for football... #DiamondInTheRough

Derek Tyson: There is no question that several SEC schools are willing to go anywhere to get top recruits, but for the most part, SEC schools stick within the usual southern states to fill out a majority of their recruiting class. Alabama signed quarterback Cooper Bateman from Utah last year, but Bateman was one of the most highly rated quarterbacks in the country and would have been highly recruited no matter where he lived. This year, however, Florida has a commitment from four-star defensive end Taven Bryan from Wyoming. He's the first person the Gators have ever landed from the state. Ole Miss has a commitment from kicker Will Gleeson, who is from Australia. As for a diamond in the rough, I believe Bryan could be that player. He's a physical defensive end that has a lot of upside.

@SportsNewsTN: Who in ESPN's Top 300 is #TENN's Butch Jones going after to help finish out their 30 total recruits?

DT: Tennessee still has a shot a few different ESPN 300 members. Defensive tackle Garrald McDowell (Covington, La./Covington) named the Vols in his top four along with Arkansas, LSU and Ole Miss on Thursday. Wide receiver Josh Malone (Gallatin, Tenn./Station Camp), wide receivers Travis Rudolph (West Palm Beach, Fla./Cardinal Newman) and Braxton Berrios (Raleigh, N.C./Leesville), running back Derrell Scott (Havelock, N.C./Havelock) and linebacker Clifton Garrett (Plainfield, Ill./Plainfield South) are all planning to visit Tennessee next weekend. There is still a long way to go until signing day, and some recruits might wait to see how Tennessee's season plays out, but in the end I think the Vols will end up with at least two of these players, if not more.

@will_hartley21: Who do you think will turn out to be Florida's top DB recruit? Also what other top DB's will possibly be the next UF commit?

DT: Based on their current defensive back commitments J.C. Jackson (Immokalee, Fla./Immokalee), Duke Dawson (Cross City, Fla./Dixie County), Quincy Wilson (Fort Lauderdale, Fla./University School) and Chris Lammons (Fort Lauderdale, Fla./Plantation), I believe Lammons could be the best prospect, but not by much. They all have their own unique skill sets and are all solid additions to Florida's class, but Lammons has that big-play ability that you are looking for in a defensive back. Come signing day, my answer could be very different. The Gators have a great shot at landing safety Jamal Adams (Lewisville, Texas/Hebron) and are in the mix for Adoree' Jackson (Gardena, Calif./Junipero Serra). As far as who could be the next DB to commit. I'd say Adams would be most likely.

@guru1039: What are the chances Bo Scarbrough decommits from Bama? Is it true he wants to be an RB in college?

DT: I spoke with Scarbrough a few weeks ago and he claims he doesn't care where he plays, but from everything I've heard and seen with my own eyes, it does appear that he wants to play running back in college. Though committed to Alabama, he is planning to take all five official visits, including trips to Florida, UCLA, Notre Dame and Georgia. Alabama likes Scarbrough's size and athletic ability to play linebacker, and that could be something that Scarbrough is considering, but it does appear he is keeping his options open. His recruitment will continue on for some time.

Just a few days after stubbing its toe on the field, the Big Ten conference will try to right the ship in the recruiting world.

Larry Scott
Brad Bournival/ESPNESPN Junior 300 running back Larry Scott will make an unofficial visit to the Horseshoe this weekend.
From official visits to commitments, here’s a look at a few programs that highlight a busy time in this week’s Big Ten storylines.

Buckeye leafs

The fact Ohio State opened as 57-point favorites against Florida A&M didn’t scare off some big unofficial visitors, as ESPN Junior 300 running back Larry Scott -- L.J. for short -- out of Hubbard (Ohio) High School will lead a group of three big names with unofficial visits to the Horseshoe.

Beavers dip into Texas for Ugwoegbu

Three-star safety Bright Ugwoegbu (Katy, Texas/Seven Lakes) is on board with Oregon State, according to multiple sources.

He made an official visit to Corvallis, Ore. on Sept. 7 for the Beavers' 33-14 victory over Hawaii.

Arkansas State, Fresno State, Houston and Illinois also extended scholarship offers to the 6-foot-2, 190-pound senior. Colorado showed interest.

Ugwoegbu is Oregon State's 11th pledge for 2014.

CB Zach Muniz picks Duke

PM ET
Three-star cornerback Zach Muniz (St. Louis, Mo./Christian Brothers) is on board with the Blue Devils, according to multiple reports.

Arkansas State, Ball State, Bowling Green, Cincinnati, Miami-OH, New Mexico, Northern Illinois, Toledo and Western Michigan also offered the 5-foot-11, 165-pound prospect. Illinois, Iowa, Iowa State, Kansas, Missouri and Northwestern expressed interest.

Muniz is commitment No. 14 for Duke.
Three-star cornerback Verkedric Vaughns (Mesquite, Texas/Poteet) admitted to making what some consider one of the most common mistakes of recruiting -- committing before visiting.

After recently taking in Arkansas State, Vaughns made the tough call of parting ways with the Red Wolves on Friday. He originally committed to Arkansas State last month.

Houston landed a pledge from high three-star running back Kaliq Kokuma (League City, Texas/Clear Creek), according to multiple reports.

Kokuma's other scholarship offers are from Arkansas State, New Mexico State and Wake Forest. Colorado, Louisiana Tech, Maryland, Texas State and UTSA also recruited the 6-foot, 180-pound prospect.

He displayed impressive athleticism this spring at a Nike combine, posting an electronically-timed 4.68 40-yard dash, 4.16 20-yard shuttle, 30.3-inch vertical, 35-foot power throw and 92.67 SPARQ.

Houston, which is making the jump from Conference USA to the American Athletic Conference (formerly Big East), has 13 players on board for 2014.

Three-star dual-threat quarterback Matthew Jordan (Jackson, Ala./Jackson) pledged on Saturday to sign with Georgia Tech, AL.com reports.

Appalachian State, Arkansas State, Furman, Jacksonville State, Louisiana-Lafayette, Louisiana-Monroe, Memphis, Middle Tennessee, Nebraska, Northern Illinois, South Alabama, Texas State, Tulane, UAB and Western Kentucky offered the 6-foot-1, 190-pound athlete.

"The last two really came down to South Alabama and Georgia Tech," he said. "I really liked Nebraska; that's just a long ways. South [Alabama] is really close to home -- it's my hometown school. I always grew up a South Alabama fan. But Georgia Tech, when I went over there for a visit, they're the ones who treated me the best and with their facilities, I just think I can call it home."

Last season, Jordan completed 83 of 143 pass attempts for 1,324 yards and 15 touchdowns and rushed for more than 700 yards and 11 more scores.

He's Georgia Tech's 10th verbal for 2014.

Malik Rosier (Mobile, Ala./Faith Academy) and Ryan Mayes (Miami/Northwestern) have become commitments 17 and 18 for Miami's 2014 class, according to multiple reports.

Rosier is a 6-foot-1, 197-pound three-star quarterback. Arkansas State, Furman, Louisiana-Lafayette, Middle Tennessee, Northern Illinois, Southern Miss and Western Kentucky were his other scholarship offers. Alabama, Auburn, Cincinnati, Duke, Kentucky and South Carolina expressed interest.

"I really like Miami, and my mom really likes Miami," he told the Press-Register. "We kind of sat down and she said, 'If you like them, what is really the point in waiting any longer?' That made sense to me so I went ahead and committed."

Last fall, Rosier completed 169 of 305 attempts for 2,238 yards and 20 touchdowns and rushed for 1,002 yards and 12 more scores.

This spring, he displayed impressive athleticism at a Nike event, including an electronically-timed 4.69 40-yard dash, 4.54 20-yard shuttle, 33.4-inch vertical, 37-foot power throw and 81.57 SPARQ.

He's also Faith Academy's catcher on the baseball team, where he hit over .400 as a junior and has received interest from SEC and ACC programs.

The 6-foot-1, 183-pound Mayes selected the Hurricanes over a scholarship offer from Syracuse. He joins high school teammate Michael Smith, a three-star outside linebacker on the Miami's commit list.

Seven 2014 prospects have announced for Miami since Friday.

The Vanderbilt Commodores started building their 2014 offensive line class Saturday with the addition of Cole Hardin (Florence, Ala./Florence), according to multiple reports.

Arkansas State, Cincinnati, Connecticut, Georgia Tech, Memphis, Middle Tennessee, Minnesota, South Alabama, Southern Miss, Tulane and Wake Forest also extended scholarship offers to the 6-foot-4, 285-pound prospect. Auburn, Kentucky, Mississippi State and Ole Miss showed interest.

Vanderbilt signed just two OLs last February. Ten players are on board for this recruiting cycle.
