Hayes' week: Four offers, UT junior day

By Damon Sayles

Silvester Hayes (Dallas/South Oak Cliff) described it as a "once-in-a-lifetime week." It began with him looking for his first offer. It concluded with four from FBS programs -- including three coming on Friday.

A 6-foot-2, 212-pound defensive end/outside linebacker hybrid, Hayes picked up an offer from Texas Tech on Tuesday. On Friday, Hayes was offered by Iowa, Colorado State and SMU. This comes hours before Hayes makes a trip to Austin, Texas, for the Texas Longhorns' junior day.

"I'm pretty excited," Hayes said of the offers. "When my coach told me about them, I was pretty shocked, but I was excited, too. I really thought he was joking with me at first.

"To get four offers in one week ... it was just a good week to get good news."

Hayes isn't shy to show his excitement about the Longhorns and how it would feel to pick up offer No. 5 this weekend. As a speed rusher, Hayes is looking to show his worth to as many colleges as possible. Playing for a program like Texas, Hayes said, would be a blessing.

"It would be an honor to get an offer from Texas," he said. "I’d be happy, very happy and excited.

"I'm trying to check out their facilities and get down there and see what type of atmosphere they have. I want to see if what they’re doing is what I want to be a part of. I'm trying to meet all the coaches and just get a feeling of what it's like."

Hayes was a second-team, all-district selection and an all-state honorable mention selection at defensive end last season. In the offseason, he's working on his quickness and versatility by competing in track and field as a 400-meters runner and a long jumper.
