CB Lamar Dawson has Big Ten suitor

By Jared Shanker

At 6 feet and 190 pounds, Lamar Dawson (Chicago/St. Rita) has the size at cornerback coaches covet. So it is no surprise Dawson recently landed offer No. 1 and has Big Ten interest.

Central Michigan offered Dawson while he was at its junior day Saturday, and Dawson believes another Michigan school could be his next offer.

Michigan State assistant coach Dan Roushar was at St. Rita a few times in January, and the Spartans are hoping Dawson will repay them with a visit to East Lansing.

“They came to the school once and came back again,” said Dawson, who does plan to visit Michigan State in the near future. “They’re telling me they think I’d fit in well. They like my film. They basically said the same thing as Central Michigan before they offered, so I don’t know what that could lead up to.”

Chippewas coach Dan Enos talked to Dawson on Saturday about his coverage skills and how he would fit into Enos’ scheme. Enos told Dawson at Central Michigan it would be up to Dawson how tight to the receiver he would line up at corner.

The Chippewas offered just two defensive backs Saturday -- Dawson and Jalen Embry -- and Enos told Dawson those are the two he wants.

“It felt good to know I’m one of the ones they targeted,” Dawson said.

Dawson’s favorite part of the visit was meeting with Enos, too.

“He told me what he expects from us if we went there,” Dawson said.

Dawson’s next visit will likely be to Indiana the weekend of Feb. 16.
