Thorson gets help from former NFL QB
By Chantel Jennings
Watch List quarterback Clayton Thorson (Wheaton, Ill./Wheaton North) is lucky enough to have lived in the right place at the right time.
He’ll graduate from the same school as former Ohio State and NFL quarterback Kent Graham, who moved back to Wheaton to raise his own family. And since the two are in the same town, Thorson has a personal quarterback coach and a guide through his own recruiting process.
“It’s awesome,” Thorson said. “You get insight on just about every school and those offenses, so it’s a great asset to have.”
Graham played a year at Notre Dame before transferring to Ohio State, and his own son, Taylor, also played for Ohio State before he transferred to Hawaii.
Because of Graham’s knowledge of the sport and process, Thorson has been able to rely on Kent.
“He just said, ‘Take it step by step, don’t get overwhelmed because it’s a fun process but guys can get caught up on it, but just make sure you’re making the right decision for yourself. Obviously, just because there needs to be life after football.’ ”
With his help, Thorson has picked up nine offers including Northwestern, Minnesota, Penn State, Illinois, Indiana and Iowa. Thorson said that the schools are mostly on the same level right now because it’s so early in the recruiting process.
He hasn’t had much of a chance to visit too many schools, though he did make it to a Northwestern bowl practice in the late fall and a junior day at Iowa two weeks ago.
Though, with another summer to work with Graham, Thorson could make some more noise on the Midwest recruiting scene.
