2014 DE gaining more Big Ten interest
By Chantel Jennings
ANN ARBOR, Mich. -- Minnesota was the first to offer 2014 defensive end Andrew Stelter (Owatonna, Minn/Owatonna), and while it still remains the junior’s only offer. Plenty of other Big Ten schools are starting to take notice of the 6-foot-4, 245-pound D-lineman.
Last weekend he was at Iowa’s junior day, and he continues to hear from Michigan, Michigan State, Nebraska and Wisconsin. He hopes to take possible winter visits to Nebraska or Wisconsin, and plans on attending the Gophers’ next junior day. And with Michigan State and Michigan being further trips, he hopes to make it out this summer, possibly for camps.
Being in-state, Stelter has visited the Twin Cities several times, but with the Gophers at the top of his list right now he’s not going to turn down a chance to get on campus.
“It’ll be another chance to learn more about the program and talk with coaches more,” Stelter said. “You get a better personal relationship with them.”
It’s harder for Stelter to take too many visits this winter since he’s playing basketball, but he’s still making time for football. Outside of basketball practice, he’s lifting four times a week and making sure to talk with coaches on the phone when he can.
“I’m trying to get a hold on the whole recruiting thing,” Stelter said. “During football season it’s kind of tough ... but now that the season is over with football I can start thinking about this a lot more and take care of it now.”
