First offer in for 2014 ATH Weiland

By Jared Shanker

Paul Haynes visited Toledo (Ohio) Central Catholic on Wednesday and ran into Derich Weiland while at the school. Haynes left without offering.

Weiland received a call from his high school later that day to call a number he did not recognize, though. It was Haynes again.

“The head coach for Kent State answered and told me he was going to offer,” Weiland said. “I was overwhelmed. It was a great feeling because it’s my first one.”

The 5-foot-10, 182-pound Weiland plays running back and slot for Central Catholic. The coaches just want to get the ball in his hands and let his speed do the rest.

Weiland was clocked at a 4.50 at Ohio State’s camp this summer, he said, and that is what colleges like most about Weiland.

“[Haynes] likes my speed, quickness and agility, and that’s a big part of his offense,” Weiland said. “I’d get some jet sweeps, and I was also the leading receiver this year. He loved my speed and hands and my return capabilities.”

Several more MAC schools are interested in Weiland, including Akron, Bowling Green, Miami (Ohio) and Toledo. A few Big Ten schools such as Indiana, Northwestern and Penn State are showing early interest. The new coaches at Boston College like Weiland a lot, too.
