OL Tretter ready for upcoming Purdue visit

By Jared Shanker

Jim Bollman recognized Jason Tretter. They met two years ago when Bollman was still the offensive line coach at Ohio State and Tretter was a junior at the Buckeyes’ summer camp. About two months later, Tretter tore his knee and the two fell out of contact for quite some time.

The last two weeks, however, Bollman has been in touch with the Richfield (Ohio) Revere offensive tackle and met Tretter at the school.

“He said he recognized me,” Tretter said, “but I was just a lot bigger.”

Tretter now stands 6-foot-7 and weighs 310 pounds, and he is squarely in the crosshairs of the new Purdue offensive line coach. Bollman and new Boilermakers head coach Darrell Hazell met with Tretter and his father Wednesday.

Originally it was just supposed to be Bollman, but Hazell surprised Tretter by coming as well. The four of them talked for close to 90 minutes.

“For my size, [Bollman] liked how well I bend,” Tretter said. “He said I could get quicker in the feet, but it’s fine for my size and thought I did well against the people I went up against. He thinks I’ll be fine at the next level.”

Hazell and Tretter are familiar with each other, too. Hazell offered Tretter when he was the coach at Kent State. The two caught up, and then Hazell told Tretter to take an official visit to Purdue this weekend. An offer from the Boilermakers could very well come this weekend.

It will be Tretter’s first time at Purdue. He has officially visited Harvard and Yale, and Yale is his favorite among the four schools to offer.

“I always dreamed of playing in the Big Ten,” Tretter said.

If Purdue offers, would Tretter accept on the spot?

“Yeah,” he said. “I would.”

Cincinnati is scheduled to visit with Tretter at his school Friday, but that is up in the air with Tretter leaving for Purdue either Thursday night or Friday morning. Virginia was high on Tretter at one point, but the Cavaliers have not been in contact recently.
