OSU lean Johnson still unsure of timeline

By Jared Shanker

WESTMONT, Ill. -- Class of 2014 athlete Lonnie Johnson (Gary, Ind./West Side) was set to make his commitment in December days after an Ohio State offer, but not long after setting the date Johnson postponed it.

While a decision could still come soon, Johnson said he is holding out on a decision for at least a few more weeks.

“I’m not sure when I’m gonna make a decision because I’m waiting on my senior teammates to make their decisions,” Johnson said. “When they make their decision, that’s when my decision is going to come.”

Signing day is Feb. 6 for Johnson’s senior teammates at West Side.

Johnson was set to commit to the Buckeyes back in December, and Ohio State is still perched at the top of the 6-foot-2, 180-pound junior’s list.

“Ohio State is still at the top of my list. They’re at the top of my list unless any other school I like jumps the bracket,” Johnson said. “Right now it’s Ohio State and then it’s Illinois.”

On Feb. 2, Johnson and his parents will travel to Columbus to visit Ohio State. A major reason for the trip is so Johnson can spend time with Buckeyes coach Urban Meyer. The two already talk on the phone once a week.

“The recent conversations was about football and how I’m doing in school,” Johnson said.

Bowling Green, Illinois and Ohio State are Johnson’s three offers, although he has interest from several high-level BCS programs. The few programs that could contest the Buckeyes are sprinkled from coast to coast.

“I’m hoping to hear from Florida State. That was a school I really liked,” Johnson said. “I’m hoping to hear from them, Notre Dame, and if Oregon comes out of nowhere -- even without Chip Kelly -- I still like Oregon.”
