3-star WR Corey Winfield changes pledge

Corey Winfield (St. Louis/Riverview Gardens) is headed east, and, to an extent, he is trading orange for orange.

For most of the year, Winfield, a three-star wide receiver had planned on taking his talents to Northern Illinois, a team that competed in the Orange Bowl earlier this month. After a trip to Syracuse last weekend -- and after the Orange offered -- Winfield has had a change of heart. The 6-foot-1, 174-pound receiver gave Syracuse his verbal commitment during an in-home visit with head coach Scott Shafer on Tuesday.

Winfield became Syracuse’s 15th commitment.

“I liked the coaches, the players, the atmosphere and the education that I can learn.” Winfield said. “Upstate [New York] was awesome, and I really like the alumni and fans there. They really love their football players.”

Recruited by Syracuse quarterbacks coach Tim Lester, Winfield chose the Orange over Northern Illinois and offers from Arkansas State, Purdue, Miami (Ohio) and several other programs. He originally committed to Northern Illinois on July 9.

Winfield caught 23 passes for 500 yards and six touchdowns for Riverview Gardens for his senior season. He also rushed for a touchdown and recorded three touchdowns on special=teams returns. Winfield additionally saw time sparingly on the defensive side of the ball, finishing with 11 tackles and an interception in the secondary.
