2014 WR Ways on offer, OSU interest
By Jared Shanker
An offer sometimes means more when it comes directly from the head coach. When that offer also happens to be the first offer, it can make a major impression on a recruit.
Beverly Hills (Mich.) Detroit Country Day 2014 receiver Maurice Ways earned his first offer Tuesday, and it came from Toledo coach Matt Campbell.
“It meant a lot. He really cared and made it his business to drive to Michigan to see me personally,” Ways said. “That speaks volumes about how serious they are and how much they want me to be a part of the program. I was shocked.”
The offer caught Ways off guard because he had not heard from the Rockets staff before. Tuesday was the first time he interacted with the coaches. He was not even receiving mail from Toledo.
A weight was lifted off Ways’ shoulders when he received the offer as it showed him the hard work was paying off.
Ways does not know much about Toledo but has a friend there. He will visit Toledo on Jan. 26 for a junior day visit.
During the season, Ohio State hosted Ways for a visit for the UAB game in September. The Buckeyes are showing the most interest of any other team, Ways said, sending him mail every day from Columbus. While on the visit to Ohio State, he spoke with area recruiter Kerry Coombs and receivers coach Zach Smith.
The visit blew him away.
“I loved it, fell in love the first time I was there,” Ways said. “The football atmosphere was amazing. The student section is crazy and unbelievable. The playing style, they love big, fast receivers. It was a great experience and I loved it.”
A visit to Michigan State should come in February, and Ways hopes to visit Michigan if invited.
