Three-star recruit decommits from Illinois
By Jared Shanker
Illinois has suffered a decommitment from a three-star prospect.
Josh Jones (Walled Lake, Mich./Western) said he is no longer committed to the Illini. He had been committed since the summer.
"Decommitted from Illinois ... just to be able to take a good look at other schools," he wrote in a text message.
Jones officially visited Pittsburgh the weekend of Jan. 11 and was scheduled to visit Michigan State beginning Friday. That visit was canceled Thursday.
Following his Pitt visit, the 6-foot-2, 200-pound safety said he could see himself at schools other than Illinois.
“Coach Chryst, he’s a good guy. I enjoyed talking to him and my position coach, Coach House,” Jones said Monday. “The campus life is pretty nice and I like the town of Pitt.
“I’m going to put some thought into [a final decision].”
Jones will not visit anywhere this coming weekend, but two programs are in the running for a visit the weekend of Jan. 25. -- Colorado and NC State. He was considering a visit to NC State last weekend but went to Pitt instead.
Colorado has not offered but is high on his list as the Buffaloes hired Troy Walters, who formerly recruited Jones for NC State.
A final decision will come down to where Jones fits best.
“It’s whose talking to me the most and where do I feel most comfortable. If a coach may leave, what place would I feel most comfortable,” Jones said.
