Top junior closes in on Spartans offer
By Jared Shanker
Michigan State had to work to get one of the Midwest’s top juniors to campus for a visit Sunday, and it looks as if an offer should follow in the coming weeks.
Galion, Ohio, athlete Dareian Watkins, who already holds several offers, made an unofficial visit to Michigan State for its junior day Sunday, and he said the visit went “great.”
The 6-foot-1, 195-pound Watkins has been invited to numerous junior days, and he has had a tough time picking which ones to attend. He hopes to go to some basketball games on his visits, so Mark Dantonio can thank Michigan State basketball coach Tom Izzo for helping to bring Watkins to campus.
During the game, Dantonio and Watkins sat together for the better part of the second half.
“We had some great conversations,” Watkins said. “He said that his staff had evaluated my film and they think I'm a guy they should offer.”
Dantonio told Watkins he began watching his film Sunday morning and liked the few minutes he saw. Watkins added that Dantonio told him he wants to watch the rest of it before offering, and area recruiter Mike Tressel told Watkins to be patient.
“It was as much fun as I could have without coming home with an offer,” he said.
The versatile Watkins already holds offers from Cincinnati, Georgia Tech, Illinois, Indiana, Northwestern, Purdue and a few MAC programs.
Watkins does not know where he will visit next, but he said Tennessee and new coach Butch Jones are sure to get a visit soon.
