Signing day decision for Spearman
By Jared Shanker
Reggie Spearman paused when he heard the question. Are you still committed to Illinois?
“Umm …,” Spearman started. “Yeah.”
The Chicago Simeon outside linebacker’s commitment level has been in question since a November visit and offer from Iowa. Despite remaining committed to Illinois, the three-star prospect said he has a top five.
Illinois, Indiana, Iowa, Minnesota and Purdue are the schools Spearman is considering. He said that list could change if any new offers come about. He will likely visit Minnesota the weekend of Jan. 18 and could visit Purdue the weekend of Jan. 25 with a teammate.
Fighting Illini linebackers coach Mike Ward visited with Spearman at Simeon today.
“It went well,” Spearman said. “We talked about the defensive a little bit and the scheme. It’s always a good talk with Illinois.”
Spearman is supposed to get an in-home visit from Illini head coach Tim Beckman this week.
Iowa, which Spearman said at one point was “50-50” with Illinois, also stopped in to see Spearman. Defensive coordinator Phil Parker was in to see Spearman.
“I got some questions I got answered and out of the way,” Spearman said of the conversation with Parker.
Back in the hunt for Spearman are two Hoosier State programs in Indiana and Purdue. Spearman originally committed to Indiana in the spring but backed off the decision shortly after. He said he is getting back in touch with them and remains interested, a big reason being the sports management major Spearman wants to get into.
The Boilermakers were the third Big Ten program to visit with Spearman at his school today. New defensive coordinator Greg Hudson met with the 6-foot-1, 218-pound senior.
“They came out to see me, so that’s exciting,” he said. “I got to talk to him about his background, coming over from Florida State. I liked how everything sounded.”
Spearman is not sure if any of those coaches would make home visits later tonight.
