Strong-legged K Scanlon seeks interest

By Jared Shanker

A kicker that goes 8-for-16 on field goal attempts is hardly going to make headlines. But what about when all eight misses come from outside 55 yards?

That is the case with Dowagiac (Mich.) Union kicker Brett Scanlon, who connected on all of his kicks from inside 55 yards.

“Ninety percent of my kickoffs were touchbacks, and 10 of those went through the uprights,” Scanlon said, emphasizing his leg strength.

Michigan State was close to offering a scholarship to Scanlon before the Spartans flipped kicker Michael Geiger from Boston College amid the coaching change at BC. At the moment, Memphis is the team showing the most interest in Scanlon, who is searching for offer No. 1 still.

“It’s been quiet. I’m hearing a little bit from Memphis,” he said. “The coach is supposed to come up and watch me kick sometime in like two weeks.”

LSU was in the picture during the summer, and Illinois told him it likely has a spot for him to walk on if he chooses.

Scanlon is looking for a scholarship, however, and he is hoping Memphis comes through with an offer. He said Bowling Green has recently contacted him as well and is talking about a scholarship.

“That’s my main goal,” he said, “to go somewhere on a scholarship.”

Scanlon kicked a school-record 55-yard field goal last season and also started at quarterback and linebacker.
