Irish gain pledge from 2014 DL Jay Hayes
By Jared Shanker
The last week has been quite kind to the Fighting Irish. Notre Dame picked up another commitment Wednesday, this one coming in the 2014 class.
Two-way lineman Jay Hayes (Brooklyn, N.Y./Poly Prep) committed to the Fighting Irish Wednesday morning.
"Just the academic opportunity and the best program in the nation for now and years to come,” Hayes wrote in a text message explaining why he committed. “Go Fighting Irish."
Hayes is the third commitment in the Irish’s 2014 class, joining Justin Brent (Indianapolis/Speedway) and Greer Martini (Woodberry Forest, Va./Woodberry Forest).
Listed as an offensive tackle, Hayes said he will likely end up playing defensive tackle for the Fighting Irish once he arrives in South Bend.
Several Poly Prep graduates have played at Notre Dame, but Hayes said that did not play a factor in his recruitment.
Last Thursday, Notre Dame received a commitment from four-star cornerback Cole Luke. That news was followed with the report ESPN 150 athlete Max Redfield was decommitting from USC with Notre Dame in a strong position to land him. And earlier this week, ESPN 150 linebacker Alex Anzalone reaffirmed his commitment to the Irish.
